Junior high track and field: CdM girls win district crown

Corona del Mar middle school girls athletes won nine individual

events en route to earning the team title at the recent Newport-Mesa

Junior High Track and Field Championships.

CdM won the overall crown, racking up 243 points, well ahead of

runner-up Dwyer of Huntington Beach (168.5). The CdM girls won the

5-foot-4-and under, seventh- and eighth-grade divisions.

District 5-4-and-under records were set by Annie St. Geme in the 1,600

meters (5:43.26) and Kelly Morgan in the 400 (1:04.2). Morgan was also

first in the 100 (13.5).

Jenna Adams won the seventh-grade 100 (13.7), 200 (29.3) and long jump

(13-9) and also contributed to the winning 400 relay (56.5).

The CdM boys finished second with 137 points, behind TeWinkle, which

scored 263.

Matthew Lutton, competing in the seventh-grade boys division, won the

100 in 12.4 and the 200 in 27.1. Thomas Folks took first in the long jump

(14-26), while Dean Pospisil won the 400 (1:01.6).

CdM girls placed second in nine events.

Tiffany Lui was second in the long jump (13-3 1/3) and the high jump

(4-6) in the 5-4-and-under division, while Michele Allred placed second

in the 100 (13.4) and the 200 (28.7) in eighth-grade competition.

Runner-up finishes were also turned in by CdM’s Tess Hodges in the 800

(2:45.4), Jill Damion in the shot put (30-8 1/2), Ann Klunder in the shot

put (30-5 3/4), Corianne Leyton in the long jump (12-11 1/4) and Audree

Smith in the shot put (33-9).

CdM boys who finished second were: Pospisil in the 100 (12.8); John Fairbanks (41-8 1/2) in the shot put and Shawn Engmann in the high jump

(5-4).

CdM girls finished third in four events. Hodges ran the 1,600 in

5:52.68, while St. Geme captured third in the 1,600 (5:55.84) and the 800

(2:44.9). Leyton was third in the 200 (29.2).

CdM boys also finished third in three events. Tim Scott ran the 1,600

in 5:33.80, David Yi put the shot 38-4 1/2 and Mike Angelo ran the 200 in

25.9.

CdM girls finished fourth in five events, including Katherine

Kaczmarek, who was fourth in the 100 (14.1), the 200 (29.4) and the high

jump (4-4). Emily Foster ran the 1,600 in 6:05.49.

Fourth-place boys finishers from CdM included Scott in the 800

(2:37.7), William Halford in the 1,600 (5:26.36), Jon Hange in the high

jump (4-6), Angelo in the 100 (12.4), Engmann in the long jump (16-2) and

Avery Fenton in the shot put (41 1/2).

CdM fifth-place girls finishers included Foster in the 800 (2:45),

Ashley Beck in the 100 (14.2) and Anna Cheng in the long jump (12-7 1/4).

CdM’s fifth-place boys finishers were: Engmann in the 100 (12.4);

Peter Eberhard in the high jump (5-2); Jack Turner in the 1,600; and

Hange in the shot put (30-10 1/2).

Mike Orozco was sixth in the 100 (12.4) and the 200 (26.4), while CdM

teammate Taylor Good was sixth in the shot put (38-0 1/2), and Charles

Vickery was sixth in the 1,600 (5:37.42).

CdM’s girls sixth-place finishers included Leyton in the 100 (13.8),

Anne Claster in the 1,600 (6:28.76) and Morgan in the long jump (12-5).
