Youth Baseball: Making some waves

MENIFEE, Calif. - Eight is great.

Especially for the Newport Waves, who jumped to No. 8 in the nation

after an undefeated performance at a Memorial Day baseball tournament.

The 11-and-under travel baseball team, ranked No. 1 in California and

No. 1 in the Western Region, recently finished 6-0 during the fourth

annual Memorial Day National Invitation Tournament, leading the

tournament in runs scored and fewest runs allowed.The Waves defeated the

Escondido Heat, 6-1, in the final game, and were led throughout the

tournament by the pitching of Garrett McRoberts, Josh Mason, Jeff Frum,

Kevin Osaki, Chris Griffin, Jeff Pfohlman, and Garrett Gallegos. Frum (9

for 12), McRoberts (6 for 10) and Chris Landon (5 for 9, 10 runs scored)

led the Waves’ offensive attack. Aramis Chavez and Alex Holtz led the

defense.

The Waves have already qualified for the 2002 11-and-younger World

Series July 21-28 in Overland Park, Kan., and will play their next

tournament June 29-30 in Temecula.
