Running: Appells dominate Pancake 5K

COSTA MESA - The Orange County Track Club’s fifth annual Pancake 5K

turned out to be a family affair Sunday as former Estancia High standouts

Johann Appell and sister Christine Appell won the men’s and women’s

overall titles at Fairview Park.

Johann Appell finished the 3.1-mile event in 16:44, 37 seconds ahead

of runner-up Dave Parsel. Alberto Munoz, another former Eagle standout,

was third in 17:53.

Christine Appell topped the field in 19:25, 54 seconds ahead of

Bethany Nickless. Diana Rosete, yet another former top Estancia runner,

was third overall in 20:45.

Adding to the Appell theme, Stephan Appell finished second (19:39) in

the men’s ages 20-24 division, while Carrie Appell (24:32) was second in

the women’s ages 25-29 division.
