NHBA Bronco baseball: Yankees top Dodgers
NEWPORT BEACH - No overtime was needed this time, as the Yankees
defeated the Dodgers for the first time all season, 7-5, to win the
Newport Harbor Baseball Association Bronco Division championship Sunday.
The teams met Saturday in a classic nine-inning battle won by the
Dodgers, 3-1, to force Sunday’s deciding game, since both teams had one
loss in the double-elimination tournament.
Sunday, the Yankees scored three runs in the third and two in the
fourth that proved to be enough.
Yankee Cameron Chase (1 for 2) made a running catch in center field in
the top of the seventh with two outs to clinch the win, after the Dodgers
had the tying runs on base.
Kyle Lawrence (1 for 4), who pitched only one inning in the playoffs,
came in to pitch three innings, allowing one run.
Yankee players gave the game ball to Joseph Hone (1 for 3, two RBIs)
for his play in right field and his base hit in the third that drove in
two runs.
Both catchers, Brandon Davis for the Dodgers and Jackson Massingill (2
for 4, single, double, RBI) for the Yankees, caught all 16 innings in the
two games, both allowing no runs to score on wild pitches or passed
balls.
Jake Dawson caught a fly ball in center in the fourth for the Yankees.
Starter Jerry Whitney pitched two innings with two strikeouts, and
Dusty Campbell (1 for 2) pitched two innings in relief with two
strikeouts for the Yankees.
Zack Gagnon went 1 for 2 with one RBI, and Charley O’Desky finished 1
for 4 with one RBI for the Yankees.
