Two students from St. Joachim School in Costa Mesa, Jeff O’Brien and

Will Crook, were honored by the American Lung Assn. of Orange County for

their submissions to the group’s poster and poetry contest. The contest

was geared toward educating younger generations on air quality and asked

students to submit artwork that depicted what clean air means to them.

O’Brien won first place in the preschool through kindergarten category,

and Crook won second. The students were given their awards at the annual

Clean Air Award ceremony held May 29. . . . The National Assn. of Flight

Instructors designated Costa Mesa resident Michael C. Church a master

certificated flight instructor-aerobatic. Of nearly 81,000 flight

instructors in the United States, fewer than 300 of them have received

the same distinction. Church, one of 18 California aviation educators to

receive the designation, was chosen for his ongoing commitment to

excellence, professional growth and service to the aviation community. .

. . Ryan Huntsman graduated from the University of San Diego on May 26,

earning his bachelor’s degree in communications. The Corona del Mar High

School graduate received the American Humanities certificate with a

leadership minor. Huntsman was also a staff writer for the student

newspaper, The Vista. . . . The Costa Mesa-based law firm Albert, Weiland

& Golden LLP welcomed John M. Funk into the firm. Funk is a magna cum

laude graduate from Whittier Law School and is also an active member of

the State Bar of California, the Orange County Bankruptcy Forum and the

Orange County Bar Assn. . . . Sgt. 1st Class Frank Narvaez III, whose

family lives in Costa Mesa, was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for

his service in Operation Noble Eagle. Narvaez served on the Kansas

National Guard Airport Security Detail as part of the anti-terrorist

operation through March. . . . Orange Coast College’s student government

posts for the 2002-03 academic year include five members of the

Associated Students Board of Trustees and four government officers. The

students include Femia Scarfone as student body president, Madeline Levy

as vice president, Robert Miller as business manager and Yvette Ramirez

as the Inter-Club Council president. The elected board members include

Charlie Dinh, Glenda Figueroa, Brieana Johnston, Daniel Turner and Kevin

Yang. The student government officers will meet weekly and will oversee a

budget of more than $1 million. . . . Diana Hossfeld of Newport Beach was

named to the dean’s list for the winter quarter of the 2001-02 academic

year at Northwestern University. She is a student in the School of Speech

and plans to transfer to the university’s journalism school next year.

Students named to the dean’s list must have maintained a minimum

grade-point average of 3.75.
