Readers Respond -- Residents already miss Dunes fireworks
We think the fireworks are sort of a tradition and entertain an awful
lot of people and probably bring revenue into the town, so we would like
to see them continue with the fireworks at the Dunes on the Fourth of
July of this year (“Fourth of July fireworks fizzle at Dunes,” May 11).

Please have the fireworks on the Fourth of July. I have children
coming from all over Orange County to see them and I always have for the
last 40-some years, so I hope that [the city] will just do it.

We’ve been residents of Newport Beach for more than 30 years and,
other than Christmas, this is the highlight of our holiday season for the
year to get together with our children and grandchild and watch the
display. Especially this year after Sept. 11, I think it’s terrible that
the city itself is not doing a display, let alone the Dunes. Having just
returned from ground zero in New York City, it’s frightening that this
year, of all the years, we need to have this, if anything, to give our
children some confidence of the future and that we still have a lot to be
grateful for and a beautiful country in spite of what they did to it.

Newport Beach can’t be without fireworks on the Fourth of July. That
just wouldn’t be American. We certainly have got to have a display
somewhere and I’d be very disappointed if it can’t be in the Back Bay,
which made it so visible to many, many people even driving along the
road. So I hope we will have fireworks somewhere, maybe off the pier.

I am in favor of the Dunes’ fireworks continuing. I’d hate to see them
discontinued. Please have the Dunes continue their fireworks. We will
miss them.

I’ve lived here almost 40 years, and I will really miss the fireworks
if they don’t have them at the Dunes. I hope something can be done.

How it is that we’re not going to have the fireworks? I’d be more than
happy to give a contribution. I’m sure every resident down here would be.
