NEWPORT BEACH -- A dedicated volunteer at Kaiser Elementary School and

in the community will be rewarded for her efforts today.

Kaiser’s Parent Faculty Organization will honor Kim Newett as the

recipient of the 2002 Martha Fluor Service Award, named after a

Newport-Mesa Unified School District trustee.

Newett’s indefatigable energy for volunteering includes serving six

years on the Parent Faculty Organization board and seven years as a Boy

Scout leader, as well as stints as a Sunday school teacher, a volunteer

at the Upper Newport Bay Interpretive Center, and a team mom for hockey

and soccer.

Newett said it’s all about the kids.

“I love being involved with the kids at the school. I think it’s

because I know a lot of the kids by faces and personalities, too, and

that’s the reward,” Newett said.

The tireless volunteer said she could hardly contain her enthusiasm

when she found out she would receive the award.

“A little fireworks went off inside me,” Newett said. “I will

volunteer my whole life. I want to volunteer at Back Bay when I’m 60

years old.”
