Honors: Sailors commend Perrine

NEWPORT BEACH - Recent Newport Harbor High graduate Greg Perrine,

who collected Sea View League titles and Most Valuable Player recognition

in both basketball and volleyball as a senior, is the school’s Boys

Athlete of the Year.

Perrine, who will attend Chapman University and play basketball, was

also chosen Sea View Boys Athlete of the Year by the league’s athletic

directors.

The 6-foot-1 standout was a three-year varsity performer in each of

his sports, overcoming a torn ACL sustained in late July, 2001, to come

back and flourish in his final prep campaign.

He averaged 10.2 points per game at point guard in basketball, helping

the Sailors claim the school’s first outright league title since 1985.

The Tars finished 20-7 after being eliminated in the second round of the

CIF Southern Section Division II-AA Playoffs.

In his final volleyball season at Harbor, he shared league and

Newport-Mesa Dream Team MVP honors with fellow senior Loyd Wright and was

also a second-team All-CIF choice in Division II.

An outside hitter, he was the Sailors’ consistent kill leader, helping

them win the league crown and advance to the CIF Division II semifinals.

They finished 26-7.

Perrine was a second-team all-league choice in basketball and

volleyball as a junior.

As a sophomore, he was second-team all-league and also played varsity

volleyball.

He was called up to the varsity for the volleyball playoffs as a

freshman, when the Sailors won the CIF Division I crown.
