Boys water polo: Corona del Mar club team finishes third

TUSTIN - The Corona del Mar boys club water polo team, consisting

of players who will make up the CdM High squad next fall, won five of six

games to finish third in the SoCal 18-and-under Tournament, completed

Sunday at Tustin High.

Artie Dorr amassed five goals, including the only two of the fourth

period, in a 6-4 triumph over Long Beach Shore Sunday. Dorr’s two

fourth-quarter tallies helped CdM pull away form a 4-4 tie at the end of

three periods.

Long Beach outscored CdM, 3-1, in the third period to pull even.

Jason DiRocco had the other CdM goal and added three assists and four

steals to the winning effort, while Beau Stockstill had seven saves to

anchor the defense.

CdM defeated Villa Park, 13-1, Sunday, when Ryan Moore led all scorers

with four goals.

CdM lost to Harvard, 8-3, in its third game of the day Saturday. It

had previously defeated Rose Bowl, 14-10, and Clovis, 16-7, after opening

the tournament with a 17-4 thumping of El Toro Set B Friday.

Dorr finished the six-game tournament with 18 goals, eight steals and

six assists, while DiRocco chipped in 11 goals, 14 assists and 12 steals.

Moore had nine goals, seven assists and six steals, including a

one-goal, four-assist, five-steal effort against El Toro.

David DiRocco scored all four of his goals in the opener, while

Stockstill had 13 saves against Rose Bowl and 10 against Harvard.

Griffin Gentry’s nine steals were second-most in the tournament for

CdM, which is now 12-4 during summer competition.
