If you’re a former Newport Beach employee who’s been enjoying the

perks of the West Newport Beach Community Center longer than you should

have, you can kiss your firm gluts goodbye.

For years, the sign-in sheet for the workout room has been pretty much

ignored. All the while, former employees who have moved on to greener

pastures could still be using the room that’s only for current and

retired city staff. That’s because no one has thought to change the

locks.

All that’s about to change. As part of a plan to replace old workout

equipment and give the place an overall upgrade, city staff will also

probably change the locks and find a new way to keep track of who’s

coming and going.

Consider your license to sweat officially revoked.

Remember the cheerleaders?

Who doesn’t? But if you’ve managed to forget the Newport Harbor High

controversy, you’ve got a chance to remember it all.

The HBO show, “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,” will focus on the

who’s on, who’s off story. And Pilot columnist Byron de Arakal even makes

an appearance.

The schedule to watch -- or avoid -- is:

July 3: HBO-East 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

HBO-West 1 p.m. and 8 p.m.

July 7: HBO-East 7:15 a.m.

HBO-West 10:15 a.m.

July 9: HBO-East 11 a.m.

HBO-West 2 p.m.
