IRVINE - Connor Whalen’s lead-off home run in the top of the first

inning proved a sign of things to come as the Newport Beach Little League

MajorNational All-Stars defeated Rancho Mission Viejo, 3-0, Monday in

first-round action of the District 55 All-Star Tournament at Hicks Canyon

Park.

Newport pitcher Chris Rosen threw a complete game shutout, striking

out four, allowing six hits. Rosen also contributed with the bat,

slamming a two-run home run over the right-field fence in the top of the

third to plate Andy Rovzar who had reached on a single.

Newport had 11 hits but stranded 11 baserunners which concerns Manager

Bob Rovzar somewhat.

“We could have had a much bigger score,” Rovzar said. “It makes me a

little nervous, but our fellas played great and looked sharp.”

Scott Colton played well defensively at first as did Thomas Dialynas,

who came in to relieve second baseman Shane Boras in the sixth, Rovzar

said.

Catcher Garrett Amoroso had only one passed ball.

“Throughout the game Rancho Mission Viejo had runners on but (Rosen)

would make a great pitch or we made a good play in the field to back him

up with strong defense,” Rovzar said.

Rosen finished 2 for 4 as did Rovzar and Boras, while Whalen went 1

for 4.

Newport next faces Rancho Santa Margarita Saturday at 3 p.m. at the

same site.
