John H. Eader Elementary School will be just one of the schools

getting a much needed face lift this summer.

Eader, along with other schools in the Huntington Beach City School

District, will undergo extensive renovation thanks to bond measure DD,

which was passed by voters in March.

Taxpayers approved $30 million that will be used to repair, modernize

and upgrade elementary and middle schools throughout the district.

“We took several high priority projects at our schools this summer,”

said Supt. Gary Rutherford, “The most extensive projects will be at Eader

School.”

Classrooms at Eader will be getting new bulletin boards and new

lighting. New asphalt will also be put in at the school.

But Eader will not be the only school getting attention this summer.

Several schools will be getting new roofs and a new districtwide

telephone system will also be installed, he said.

While everyone is excited about the improvements, those who have to

work through the summer anticipate some inconveniences.

Some notable scholarship awards

Marina High School junior Casey Harelson was awarded a $3,000 U.S.

savings bond, by the Fleet Reserve Assn., Orange County Branch 175 in

recognition of his second place win at the national level of the

Americanism Essay Contest.

Casey’s essay on “What Memorial Day Means to Me,” was previously

awarded $125 in savings bonds for his first place win at the branch

level along with an additional $100 for his first place win at the

Southwest Regional level.

Huntington Beach High School senior Hiroki Terashima was awarded a

$1,000 college scholarship from the Ronald McDonald House Charities/Asian

Pacific Students Increasing Achievement programs for his commitment to

the community. Terashima also selected the Huntington Beach High School

California Scholarship Federation to receive a $500 honorarium from the

program. Terashima served as president of the science club at Huntington

Beach High School, where he was also involved with the California

Scholarship Federation and Red Cross Club. He has also tutored eight

different students in English, math Japanese and Spanish.
