Triangle Square needs something interesting

Regarding “Changes on tap for Triangle Square,” (July 11):

Triangle Square is a wonderful space, full of possibility, but

frankly I think people are bored with the same old retailers found in

every shopping mall across America.

Why not jazz things up a bit by adding some character to the mix?

The square would make a wonderful location for a collection of

unique children’s stores -- ones which would appeal to adults and

children alike.

The addition of an interactive fountain or sculpture might liven

things up -- the sound of children’s laughter adds instant life to

any environment. Or perhaps the space could be filled with off-beat

art or design retailers.

In keeping with Costa Mesa’s theme “City of the Arts,” the plaza

would make a perfect venue for local artists and musicians to

showcase their work on a regular basis. The square is safe, clean and

centrally located; all it needs is something of interest to draw

people there.

Things could be worse regarding old structures

In reply to the Mailbag item “Old everything seems to be

disappearing,” July 17: Be glad you are not a descendant of the

Juaneno-Luiseno tribe.

All the Native American historical sights I know in Newport-Mesa

have been desecrated, debased, relocated or built upon. We live in a

place of no history by populace choice, individual decision or

elected official decree.

Perhaps the land we live on has too bloodied a history that we

chose not to remember. Regarding the current replacement of older

buildings, structures and trees, perhaps the current generation feels

about these items like earlier generations (maybe yours) felt about

the Juaneno-Luisenos. For our sakes, it is good the current

generation is now more civilized than the generations who “settled”

this civilized land.

Cartoon provided laughs on two separate days

It was with great amusement that I read the letter from a Costa

Mesa resident who was so offended by a cartoon about the proposed

Mormon temple (Mailbag, “Church cartoon upsets Costa Mesa resident,”

Wednesday).

The author threatened to sue the Daily Pilot if another paper was

delivered to her home she was so offended. I am quite sure this

letter brought far more laughs than Steve Bolton’s original cartoon.

Now I’m not one to stir up trouble, but I think I’ll throw a Daily

Pilot on her lawn just to sit back and watch the lunacy unfold. What

really surprises me is that this cartoon is what brought the author

to the brink of a lawsuit. She has obviously never read a Steve Smith

article.

Newport Beach really keeps its beaches clean

As a long-time resident of the oceanfront, I want to commend the

city of Newport for the marvelous manner in which they keep our beach

clean.

Throughout the year, the men and machines work steadily to clean

up after the crowds. It is actually much cleaner now than it was

years ago when there were far fewer people. I was particularly

impressed on the morning after the Fourth when I saw a group of men

picking up trash by the pier and the trash trucks and street and

beach cleaners working at dawn.

By midmorning, the beach area was cleaned up and ready for another

busy Summer day. Cheers to the city of Newport Beach.
