In his first race on the two-mile Michigan Speedway, MCI Toyota

driver Max Papis of Newport Beach scores the best finish in the U.S.

500, taking the checkered flag in eighth place. The finish brings him

to 21st in PPG Cup points standings and the top Toyota driver in the

standings.

Corona del Mar High’s frosh/soph boys water polo team sweeps

through the Buena Park 15-and-under Water Polo Tournament, going 4-0.

They defeat Sonora in the first game, 19-4, as D.J. Jackson and Jason

Palda each score four goals as Matt Petry adds three. After a

forfeit, CdM beat La Habra, 14-5, as Palda, Alex Nichenke and Ryan

Jetton each turn in hat tricks as Greg Marchiorlatti and Garrett

Gentry score two goals apiece. CdM then tops Buena Park, 12-6, in the

final game led by Ryan Tucker’s four goals.

A six-boy team representing Costa Mesa wins the 12-and-under

California Outrigger Association’s State Championship in Santa

Barbara. The team includes Kaiona Kalama Putro, Joshua Kalama, Trent

Young, Jermaine Young, Jeffrey Waldron and Tyler Waldron.

The Orange County United Breakers, a girls 16-and-under club

soccer team uses a 7-1 advantage over five opponents to earn the

Bonita Rebels Invitational Tournament title in San Diego. The

Breakers make a 3-1 win over Villa Soccer Club of Coronado look

simple. Britta Vogele (CdM) does not allow a goal until the final

quarter, and is assisted by twin sisters Margi and Kate Simon and

Jaycee Mahler. Jessica Luchesi, the team captain, knocks in the

Breakers’ first goal as Jennifer Allen scores in the first half to

give the Breakers a 2-0 lead into halftime. Allen scores again to

equalize a Villa goal. Kyndra Cox (Newport Harbor) makes sound

defensive plays.

Stefanie Hughes, an All-CIF girls soccer standout from Corona del

Mar High, scores two goals to lead a 3-0 victory for the Fountain

Valley Spirit under-16 team over the Texas Challenge in the

third-place game of the U.S. Youth Soccer National Cup Tournament at

the University of Richmond in Virginia. Hughes is among the team’s

leading scorers of the year, and is joined by Corona del Mar

teammates Ali Havriluk, Whitney West and Newport Beach resident

Chrissy Whalen. The Spirit finish the regular season with a 47-2-4

record. Hughes’ goals against the Texas Challenge help Coach Jim

Stucker’s Spirit bounce back from a 3-0 semifinal loss to a team from

Virginia and gives the Spirit a solid team effort to finish the

tournament off.

The United States men’s volleyball team reaches the quarterfinals

in the XXVth Olympiad in Barcelona, Spain with three straight

victories after an opening-match loss to Japan. Newport Harbor High

and Orange Coast College product Steve Timmons, a future Daily Pilot

Sports Hall of Famer, leads the United States with 38 kills in a

five-set win over Canada, which was followed by a come-from-behind

five-set win over Spain with Timmons contributing 27 kills. The U.S.

continues its Olympic run with a 9-15, 16-14, 15-11, 15-13 win over

No. 1-ranked and current world champion Italy before 6,500 fans. The

United States entry ties the critical second set at 10, 12 and 14

before Bob Samuelson provides the winning moment on a block.

Samuelson, along with reserves Dan Greenbaum and Brent Hilliard, lead

the way in the latter stages of the match.

Host Newport Harbor Yacht Club wins the U.S. Yacht Club Challenge

Cup with the Catalina 37 fleet. NHYC skipper Colin Bate guides the

crew to a first-place finish in the final’s eighth and last race

after NHYC is flagged for a premature start. NHYC bow commander Gary

Bechtel says the biggest reason NHYC wins is “consistency.” Catalina

37’s are used for the first time as NHYC beats San Diego Yacht Club

and St. Francis Yacht Club (San Francisco), respectively, to claim

the championship.
