The Friends of the Newport Beach Library will hold a used book

sale in the Friends Meeting Room at the Newport Beach Central

Library. Members are invited to attend a preview sale from 1 to 5

p.m. Aug. 16. The sale will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4

p.m. Aug. 17. Hardcover books will sell two for $1, and paperback books will sell six for $1. All proceeds will go to the library

The Newport Beach Newcomers Club meets at 10 a.m. the third

Wednesday of each month at different homes. The group of about 100

women go on the road and play golf, tennis, bridge and more. The

The Friends of the Newport Beach Public Library seek book

donations to raise funds for the library system. Books may be left at

any of the three branch libraries, including, Balboa, Mariners or

Corona del Mar. They may also be left in the special book closet next

to the Friends Bookstore at 1000 Avocado Ave. All hardcover and

paperback books are acceptable, with the exception of law books and

The Thursday Morning Women’s Club, a 40-year-old friendship club,

is seeking new members. The club, which contains various general

interest sections, meets at 11 a.m. on the second Thursday of every

Interfaith couples with one Jewish partner are invited to

participate in an interfaith couples discussion group hosted by the

Jewish Family Service of Orange County. The group is geared toward

The Hoag Cancer Center sponsors two tai chi classes taught by

Victor Armand: a session for intermediate- to advanced-level students

from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays for people with cancer and their

families. A beginner session meets from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Fridays.

The classes are designed to reduce stress, increase longevity and

promote a sense of well-being with basic, easy-to-learn,

non-strenuous movements to aid in balance and concentration. No

The Estancia High School

Parent Teacher Student Assn. hosts a monthly paper drive every

Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon in the school’s northwest parking lot,

on the corner of Estancia North and Placentia. Newspapers that are

bound, loose or bagged are accepted, however cardboard, bound

material such as phone books or thick magazines are not. Bins are

available for drop off every day of the month for people who prefer

to go at other times. All funds raised go to the association. Free.

Oasis Senior Center offers a daily telephone contact program for

seniors who have a limited local support system. They also offer

ongoing computer classes that teach the basics of Word, Quicken,

1 p.m. Wednesdays at the Orange County Department of Education, 200
