Orange Coast College has introduced a Vietnamese language class

this fall for the first time.

The class will be offered in the literature and languages

division. Fall classes will begin Aug. 26.

Listed as Vietnamese 180, the class will be known as “Elementary

Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The college offers six other foreign languages -- French, German,

Hebrew, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. Orange Coast administrators

plan to add Arabic in fall 2003.

Plans are in the works to also add classes to teach Chinese,

Korean and Portuguese, said Michael Mandelkern, the division’s dean.

Fall registration began July 15. The school charges $11 per unit.

Eleven defibrillators added to UCI campus

UC Irvine has installed 11 lifesaving defibrillators on its campus

to help “shock” back to life the hearts of people who have had a

heart attack.

The units, which are the size of a laptop computer, are used for

victims of cardiac arrest. They will be installed in five campus

police cruisers, the Student Health Center, the Anteater Recreation

Center, Bren Events Center and Crawford Hall.

UCI, with help from the American Red Cross and the American Heart

Assn., will provide training for its staff members on how to use the

devices.

Grant gives city new tool to fight arson

The Costa Mesa Fire Department will have a new arson investigating

tool thanks to a $2,000 grant from Factory Mutual Insurance Company

it received last week.

Fire officials say they will purchase a digital video camera to

use in arson investigations, and arson-related crimes, with the

funding received. The purchase of the camera is part of an ongoing

effort by the Department of Arson Investigations unit to resolve and

eliminate arson crimes in the city, officials said.

Representatives from Factory Mutual Insurance Company said the

company sponsors an Arson Grant Program to improve overall fire

investigation programs in various local cities. Costa Mesa Fire

Department met the specific criteria for funding, which included

direct involvement in arson prevention, lowered incidents in arson

and promotion of increased collaboration between fire and police

officials when investigating arson crimes.

for School” program.

presented school officials from Kaiser and Woodland Elementary

schools with a check for $1,065 to be split between the two schools.

restaurant sales for designated nights to participating schools.

Orange County Special Education Program West participated, with

totals of more than $2,800. For information or scheduling, please
