Newport pumps up with 13 weightlifters placing

Newport Harbor football players fared well in their recent
summer-session weightlifting competition at Newport Harbor, where
five players captured first-place laurels in the clean and jerk in
their weight classes.
Newport assistant coach Mike Bargas said about 80 lifters competed
from four schools: Newport Harbor, Tustin, Loara and Esperanza, with
13 Newport Harbor players placing in the top three out of possible 24
spots in eight categories.
Miguel Garcia lifted 154 pounds in the 56-kilogram weight class
for first while Jose Munoz lifted 225 pounds in the 152-pound (69
kilo) class.
A pound is equivalent to 2.2 kilos.
Jimmy Sanchez hoisted 264 pounds in the 169-pound (77 kilo) class
as Rhett Hartsfield lifted 253 pounds in the 85 kilo class as Tommy
Cottrell took first lifting 260 pounds in the 231-pound (105 kilo)
class.
Four Newport athletes took second place. Spencer Link hoisted 225
pounds in the 152-pound (69 kilo) class as Bryce Sawyer lifted 236
pounds in the 169-pound (77 kilo) class. Dartangnan Johnson lifted
225 pounds to take second in the 85 kilo class as Jack Skhen lifted
253 pounds in the 231-pound (105 kilo) class.
Newport also had four third-place finishers as Andrew Giberson
lifted 132 pounds in the 123-pounds (56 kilo) class. Kyle Cody
hoisted 176 pounds in the 137-pound (62 kilo) class. Jordan Smith
lifted 215 pounds in the 85-kilo class and Peter Hoyt lifted 264
pounds in the 207-pound (94 kilo) class.
