McCarthy added to UCI staff

Kevin McCarthy has been named an assistant track and field coach

for the men’s and women’s teams at UC Irvine. The announcement was

made by UCI Cross Country/Track & Field Director Vince O’Boyle, who

indicated that McCarthy’s primary concentration will be with the

jumps events.

McCarthy is returning to UC Irvine, where he served as assistant

track and field coach from 1986-91. Most recently he was director of

men’s cross country/track and field at Cal State Los Angeles from

1991-2002. He also was in the same position with the Golden Eagles’

women’s programs in 1996, and from 1998-2002.

During his tenure at Cal State L.A., his track and field programs

recorded 14 top-10 finishes in NCAA Division II Outdoor and Indoor

Championships.

McCarthy led the Eagles to three California Collegiate Athletic

Association titles in track and field.

He was named CCAA Coach of the Year three times and was selected

as the U.S. Track Coaches Association West Region Coach of the Year

on four occasions.

McCarthy received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from UCLA

in 1977 and his master’s in physical education from Cal Poly San Luis

Obispo in 1986.

He served as assistant coach for the women’s track and field

program at Cal Poly from 1981-85.

During his coaching career spanning the three universities,

McCarthy has coached 145 NCAA All-Americans and 20 NCAA individual

national champions.
