Rescue from above

Police rescued a swimmer in Sunset Beach -- from above.

In their routine sweep of the coastline, police officers in the

department’s helicopter spotted a man caught in a riptide who

appeared to be in immediate danger, said Huntington Beach Police Sgt.

Gary Meza.

Officers tried unsuccessfully to contact lifeguards, before

deciding to step in themselves.

Pilot Tim Lynn hovered 20 feet above the water while flight

officer Rick McNaughton threw a rescue ring to the swimmer. The

swimmer was able to get to the ring and make it back to shore where

lifeguards were able to administer first aid.

The swimmer was not injured during the rescue attempt.

Thousands of illegal fireworks confiscated

The Huntington Beach Fire and Police Department confiscated more

than 6,200 fireworks during the Fourth of July holiday. Of the 6,200

fireworks seized, 4,450 of the fireworks were illegal while 1,750 of

them were of the safe and sane variety.
