Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

Bob Valerio shoots a one-over-par 141 in 36 holes covering the

par-70 Mesa Verde course and the par-72 Los Lagos course to win the

25th annual Costa Mesa Championships. He edges Gabriel Armanderez,

Andrew Nelson and Kenneth Wertzberger by one stroke. In seniors play

Ron Cowan cards a 151 with John Rasmussen and Don Pichovich scoring

154. The low net winner goes to Larry Green (137) as Luis Cardenas

tops all competitors in the First Flight category (136). Brian

Valpariso and Joe Venegas Jr. win Second Flight levels with two 138s.

Newport Harbor’s football team beats Huntington Beach in the

teams’ annual summer-session-ending weightlifting competition.

Returning senior standouts Pete Hogan, Brett Baker and Derek Fox

produce victorious lifts. Hogan hoists 135 kilograms (297 pounds) in

the clean and jerk to win the 237.5-pound (108 kilo) weight class.

Hogan is one of seven Sailors to win eight weight divisions. Fox, an

All-Newport-Mesa District and All-Sea View League defensive tackle,

wins the 237.5-and-heavier division with a clean and jerk of 275

pounds. Baker, also an all-district and all-league cornerback, lifts

253 pounds to win the 183-pound division. The junior-to-be Brant Hill

lifts 247.5 pounds to win the 218-pound class while juniors David

Hurtado, Robert Peredia and Carlos Henriquez were also division

winners.

Corona del Mar’s Caylan Leslie breezes past the No.3-ranked

16-year-old in the nation, Katia Bogomolova, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to

the round of 16 of the USTA Girls 16s National Championships.

Kimberly Singer, 13, captures the Costa Mesa Juniors Tournament,

winning the girls 14s singles title at TeWinkle Park. She drops just

six games in five matches and disposes of Los Angeles’ Jessica Lech,

6-0, 6-1, in the championship match. She will be an eighth-grader at

Harbor Day. CdM High’s Sameer Chopra wins the boys 16s title with a 7-5, 3-1 retire win.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

hoff scores four goals and Billy Messinger has two eight saves to

lead the CdM 13-and-

under water polo team to a 11-9 victory in the opener of the

Junior National Championships. Jeff Marchiolatti adds three goals as

Carter Weir contributes two and Morgan McDermott and Jeremy Piasecki

each have one as CdM holds off Los Angeles’-based Commerce.

Orange Coast College product Dave Staton drives what team

officials deem a 600-foot home run for the Triple-A Las Vegas Stars,

an affiliate of the San Diego Padres. An outfielder and designated

hitter, Staton leads the Pacific Coast League with 19 home runs, and

has 74 RBIs, a .289 batting average and a .528 slugging percentage.

Newport Harbor’s double-All-CIF in basketball and volleyball

standout Justin McIntee settles on a volleyball scholarship at Long

Beach State.

The Newport Beach Dukes reach the TeamTennis championship by

stunning the Vail Eagles in Colorado, 25-23. The Dukes and Eagles had

split two regular-season matches against one another. Ronnie Bathman

and Rikard Bergh post an impressive 6-2 victory over Newport Beach

resident Scott Davis and teammate David Pate. Amy Frazier wins a

singles match for the Dukes to give them a cushion they would need as

Vail comes back to within one point, 24-23, before Newport captures

the first game in overtime to pull out the match.
