Two stories in the Daily Pilot about the Costa Mesa Sanitary

District contained incorrect information regarding the agency’s

recent rate hike (“Costa Mesa Sanitary District weighs rate

increase,” Aug. 8, and “Sanitary district raises fees by 5%,” Aug.

10). The increase was the second in the past 10 years, and was made

based on the past year’s Consumer Price Index for Orange, Los Angeles

and Riverside counties, which was 2.87%. The cost of transferring

trash to landfills is $48 per ton, which includes both separated and

non-separated trash. The haulers can request a cost-of-living

increase of no more than 3% per year during fee negotiations.

Finally, “liquid waste” the sanitary district collects does not

travel through the city’s gutters.
