Nursing department expands at Golden West

This fall nursing students at Golden West College will be able to

take their medical career in a new direction. The college will offer

a program that will allow students to become licensed psychiatric

technicians.

Licensed psychiatric technicians work under the direction of

doctors, rehabilitation therapists, social workers or registered

nursing professionals. They are responsible for the care of mentally

or developmentally disabled patients.

Psychiatric technicians can earn between $30,000 and $50,000 a

year. Students who complete the one-year program successfully will be

able to apply for the California licensing examination.

Anyone wanting more information regarding this new program should

call (714) 895-8779.

Gearing up for school -- lunch program released

With school just a month off, the Huntington Beach City School

District released its policy for providing free and reduced-price

meals for children served under the National School Lunch Program

this week.

Program guidelines are set by the district based on income and

household size. Children from homes in which the income level is

either at or below $11,518 a year will be eligible to receive free

meals. Students from homes with a yearly income of $16,931 or less

will be able to receive reduce priced meals.

Any child who receives food stamps or participates in the

California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids program, or

who receives Kinship Guardianship Assistance Payments, will

automatically be eligible for free meals regardless of income level.

Children who participate in the Food Distribution Program on Indian

Reservations also automatically qualify for free meals.

Eligibility for parents with foster children is based on a

separate application and is based solely on the child’s income

Application forms are being distributed to all households and they

are also available at the principal’s office in each of the district

schools. Applications must be filled out and returned to the school

any time during the school year.
