Lions prepare back-to-school supplies for first-graders

For the third consecutive year, the Harbor Mesa Lions Club is

preparing for its School Box Supply project. Members have collected

shoeboxes, decorated and filled them with supplies such as rulers,

pencils, erasers, glue, scissors, sharpeners, etc. for the

first-graders at Whittier Elementary School in Costa Mesa. This year,

the club will hand out more than 200 boxes on the first day of

school, Sept. 3.

Project Chairman Joan Parks is hopeful the project can be expanded

to include more schools in the coming years as it has been so

well-received by the school administration, teachers, parents and

students. Financing for the project has been obtained through

fund-raising events and donations.

“These supplies will help get the children off to a good start

with the equipment they need to succeed,” says Parks. “It can be a

hardship on some families to buy these supplies and our club

appreciates the opportunity to help.”

According to the members who help distribute the boxes to the

children, all the efforts are worth it when they see the smiles and

faces lighted up with surprise when they open the boxes.

The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor will present an evening of

Dinner and the Movies for your enjoyment on Aug. 29. This 12th annual

Benefit Screening at the Lido Theater in Newport Beach stars Robin

Williams in “One Hour Photo.”

Activities will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a food festival by more

than a dozen area restaurants. Exchangites promise you a fun-filled,

casual evening of food, wine and entertainment. Proceeds from this

charity event support the Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center

and other youth-centered community programs, including college

scholarships for deserving under-privileged high school achievers.

Charitable contributions of $40 per ticket may be made payable to the

STILL SERVING AMERICA

Costa Mesa American Legion Post 869 will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at

the Costa Mesa Air National Guard facility, 2651 Newport Blvd.

Founded in 1919 by veterans for veterans, the legion, according to
