Light runner sets off collision, police say
Two victims walked away from a three-car collision in Costa Mesa
on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Placentia Avenue and
18th Street about 4:15 p.m., when a white Honda ran a red light and
broadsided a black Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle, causing the
Explorer to spin and roll over onto a black Honda, said Costa Mesa
Police Sgt. Scott May.
The drivers of the Explorer and the black Honda were able to walk
out of their own vehicles and taken to Western Medical Center in
Santa Ana for treatment.
The crash drew a crowd of onlookers to all four corners of the
intersection. One group came rushing over from Silver Star Casting
Co. One of its employees, who had just left work, was driving the
Explorer. Silver Star’s offices are near the location.
“It’s always something,” owner Luke Burrett said. “[The employee]
has got the rest of the week off.”
The driver who caused the collision said his brakes weren’t
working. But after inspecting the car, police officials found the
brakes were in proper working condition and cited him for running a
red light, May said.
The accident tied up the intersection for about 45 minutes.
