Newport Harbor 18-and-under boys win

Newport Harbor High’s boys varsity water polo squad, playing as a

club team during the summer, won the 34th annual Hawaiian

Invitational Water Polo Tournament held in Oahu August 12-17 in boys

18-and-under competition.

Held at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex, the University of

Hawaii hosted 87 teams from around the world, including host Hawaii,

mainland U.S., Canada, France, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa

and Japan.

Fourteen Newport team members, coached by Rob Grayeli, beat

Hawaiian Island “A” in the championship game.

Senior Nathan Weiner was named the division’s Most Valuable

Player.

Newport shut the door on all in its division, handling Rainbow

(Hawaii), American River, Malibu, South Pasadena, Scripps and Laguna

Beach teams.

Sophomore goalie Michael Robinson stepped up to the challenge and

recorded 32 saves in the seven-game series in an 18-team field.

Leading scorers for Newport included Ross Sinclair, Charlie

Hockenbury, Jay Thompson and Nathan Weiner. Ross Sinclair contributed

14 assists and Jay Thompson had nine steals.
