John Wayne Airport raided for false IDs

John Wayne Airport was one of four Southland airports raided by

federal officers Thursday in search of 120 workers suspected of using

fake identification cards.

At the crack of dawn, officers launched “Operation Tarmac” to

serve warrants on workers at John Wayne, Los Angeles International,

Ontario International and Long Beach airports, said John Miller,

director of governmental affairs for the California Union of Safety

Employees, which represents 7,000 Department of Motor Vehicle

investigators.

Because the investigation lasted into the evening, officials were

not able to divulge how many arrests had been made, said Thom Mrozek,

spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office.

The investigation involved officials from the DMV, U.S. Marshals

Service, the Secret Service, Immigration and Naturalization Service,

the Department of Transportation, and the Social Security

Administration, Miller said.

Violators will probably face one or more of three state or federal

charges, including fraud, perjury and false statements.

Gang-rape suspects’ hearing postponed

The preliminary hearing for three teenage boys who are accused of

gang-raping a 16-year-old girl in a Corona del Mar home has been

postponed.

The hearing, which was scheduled to occur Wednesday, was moved to

Sept. 30 by mutual agreement of both the prosecution and the defense

attorneys, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Jana Hoffmann, who would not

divulge the reasons for the postponement.

Gregory Haidl, Kyle Nachreiner and Keith Spann -- all 17-year-old

students at Rancho Cucamonga High School -- allegedly drugged the

victim’s drink and then raped her while a video camera filmed the

incident on the evening of July 5 in the home of Don Haidl, an

assistant sheriff with the county.

At the preliminary hearing, the judge will decide whether there is

enough evidence on the 21 felony charges against the boys to go to

trial, Hoffmann said.

All three pleaded not guilty on July 17.
