There are many moments of laughs and cheers at the annual Senior

Olympics, which are held at the Orange County Fairgrounds.

And the one event, above all, that seems to get the most smiles

and surprise is the shooting event.

The surprise comes when the seniors find out they are pretty good

at hitting the target.

The smiles come when they make the shot.

For this photo, all it really takes is the pull of the trigger,

both hers and mine.

The juxtaposition of the woman, eye firmly on her target, and the

paint-ball gun makes for an unusual sight. And if the goal is to get

readers to take a look at the story, this kind of photo will do it.

Readers should want to know what the photo is all about, and while it

tells a lot of the story, there’s more to be had.

At the least they should want to know for sure she hit the target.

I took the shot with a 300-millimeter lens from the side to show

the concentration both of their faces. You get a sense of the action,

just before it happens.
