Navy Seaman Apprentice Randi L. Roberts, niece of Debbie L. Miller

of Costa Mesa, graduated from the communications signals collection

and processing course at the Naval Technical Training Center Corry

Station in Pensacola, Fla. During the course, Roberts, a 2001 Costa

Mesa High School graduate, received instruction on the gathering and

analyzing of intelligence information.... Navy Cmdr. John M.

Slaughter of Newport Beach visited Crete, Greece, while assigned to

the Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 15, which is home-ported in

Norfolk, Va. The 1979 Newport Harbor High graduate and his squadron

fly the twin turbine-powered aircraft, SH-60F and HH-60H helicopters,

in both anti-submarine warfare, combat search and rescue, and naval

special warfare support. They will soon participate in Operation

Enduring Freedom.... Air Force Cadet Koo H. Kim of Costa Mesa

graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

She received her bachelor’s degree in behavior science and was

commissioned as a second lieutenant. Kim, a 1997 Costa Mesa High

graduate, completed a curriculum that provided a balanced program of

military training, academics, physical training, athletic

conditioning, and character and ethical development.... Newport Beach

resident Mariela Manriquez completed a four-week summer math program

at Cal State Fullerton last month. The goal of the program was to

encourage young women to pursue careers in science and mathematics at

the college level. Manriquez, a Newport Harbor High student, and her

fellow participants heard presentations from professional women,

received tips on preparing for college and worked on strengthening

their skills through six hours of algebra II per day.... Newport

Beach attorney Jerry Steerings was hired to represent Isabella and

Martin Behrens of Palm Desert. The couple was charged with allegedly

beating a police officer and defrauding an innkeeper. The two pleaded

not guilty in an Indio courtroom last week.... The 2002 Orange County

Fair, which ended July 28, recognized many Costa Mesa residents for

their talents. Madeline Stack, 11, received top honors for her

“Cherries Jubilee” in the Informal Table Setting category; Lane

McGill won best of show and was the division winner for her mermaid

collection; Matt Koelsch won top honors for his skate deck; Ursula

Bohen won the first-place ribbon in Fine Arts for her ceramic coil;

and Victoria Baer was the Christmas Decorations Division winner for

her stitched nativity scene.
