Here are some of the decisions coming out of the Costa Mesa
Planning Commission meeting on Monday.
CHRISTIAN OUTREACH CENTER PARKING
Costa Mesa planning commissioners unanimously approved a request
from Christian Outreach Center officials to deviate from usual
parking requirements for their new place of worship on Harbor
Boulevard.
Officials representing the Christian Outreach Center, slated to
move into a 1,954-square-foot space in the Commerce Park complex,
asked for a conditional-use permit that would reduce the required
parking spaces from 25 to six.
Plans for the church, which has about 30 members, call for a
reception area, office space, sanctuary and restroom on the first
floor and a youth room, “clothing and food room,” and restroom on the
second floor, according to a staff report.
Planner Mel Lee said he did not expect any parking problems
because church services are held when the other complex businesses
are closed.
WHAT IT MEANS
The Christian Outreach Center will conduct business out of the
office on weekdays and hold services on weekends only.
BARNACLE BILL’S
The Planning Commission again thwarted any plans for an owner of
the Barnacle Bill’s boat repair business to build a deck for boat
detailing and storage by upholding the original denial of the
project.
In July, the commission denied a request to build a detailing deck
at the 1609 Pomona Ave. business, saying the view of the boats would
not be properly shielded. Commissioners also decided the deck would
create a traffic hazard.
Business owner Dan Zaccuri appealed the decision, saying the
proposed ramp would block visibility of the lower storage yard and
proposed additional decorative screening to shield people from the
view, a staff report reads.
Planning commissioners expressed the same concerns Monday, saying
the project did not allow enough room to move the boats in and out of
the storage without backing them out onto the street and causing a
traffic jam.
Commissioners encouraged Zaccuri to use a canopy that falls in
line with city regulations as a detailing area.
WHAT IT MEANS
Zaccuri will not be permitted to build a deck and ramp for boat
storage and detailing.
