Local band and Harp Inn Sept 11 tribute

As Sept. 11 approaches and people across the nation begin to look

for ways to commemorate the anniversary of the tragic event, Orange

County residents will have the opportunity to lend their support and

give their donations by attending the “Benefit the Blue” concert at

the Harp Inn in Costa Mesa.

Citizen Joe, a local band founded by Costa Mesa Police Officer

Kurtiss Lystne, will host the live concert, which will pay tribute to

New York City’s fallen heroes and their families.

The event is free, but collections will be taken throughout the

evening and all proceeds will be donated to the World Trade Center

Police Disaster Relief Fund.

The concert will take place on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. The band will be

playing all original music, including “Rollin’ ”, currently receiving

airplay on FM radio.

The inn is at 130 E. 17th St.

Prostate screening for police and fire fighters

An estimated 30,200 men will die from prostate cancer this year

alone, according to the National Prostate Cancer Coalition. In an

effort to encourage early detection, the coalition has arranged for a

number of free screenings for police and firemen nationwide.

On Sept. 27 and 28, the coalition will head to Costa Mesa as part

of its Protecting Our Protectors’ program. The goal of this program

is to increase awareness of prostate cancer among law enforcement,

fire fighters and other emergency personnel and veterans while at the

same time providing special cancer screenings to current and retired

members of these protective services at various locations.

The coalition sees this program as an opportunity to share in the

Sept. 11 commemorations by giving something back to the thousands of

Americans, particularly in those fields, that were most affected by

the tragedy.
