UCI professor honored for his cancer research
UC Irvine honored Eric Stanbridge, an internationally known expert
in the molecular genetics of cancer, with its highest faculty title
-- Distinguished Professor.
The title is reserved for senior faculty members who have achieved
the highest levels of scholarship during their careers.
Stanbridge is a professor of microbiology and molecular genetics
at the college of medicine and holds an appointment in the School of
Biological Sciences. His research focuses on the functional
characterization of genes that cause cancer and on tumor suppressor
genes that are involved in cancer predisposition and progression.
He was one of the first researchers to characterize the genetic
nature of tumor suppression and to use genetic material called
ribosomal RNA as a molecular probe to detect pathogenic
microorganisms.
