Election choices are easy, now just make them

I’ve been reading the editorial lamenting the lack of choices in

the race for Costa Mesa City Council (“We’ll just have to get by with

less this year,” Aug. 18.

In my, not so humble opinion, we have clearly drawn lines between

qualified candidates and simple choices to make between them. It’s

unfortunate but most people don’t follow local politics, even though

it’s the level of government that affects most directly, so I’ll give

you a voters’ guide for the local race for City Council based on who

you might choose for president.

Let’s start on the left. If you would vote for a presidential

slate of let’s say, Hilary Clinton, Dianne Feinstein, you’d probably

choose a Linda Dixon, Katrina Foley combination.

Let’s move a little bit more to the moderate right. Let’s say you

might vote for a Colin Powell, Dana Rohrabacher ticket. The clear

choice would obviously be a Gary Monahan, Bill Perkins ticket.

Now, if you are over in the Pat Robertson, Pat Buchanan territory

and you think Chris Steel speaks to your views, you have an easy

choice with Allan Mansoor.

Well, there you have it. All these people are capable of sitting

on the dais in City Hall and representing their views. Which ones

represent yours.

There comes a time in one’s life to drop the keys

I am certainly not against “older people” -- I’m an “aging ‘baby

boomer’” myself. But, the article, “Elderly woman hits 13 with car,”

(Tuesday) I feel, must be a “wake-up” call to those of a certain age,

to be tested for mental fitness, regarding driving continuance.

I remember, when my dear (now departed) grandmother was 80, she

got in the car and hit another car in the rain. My mom took the keys

away from her after that.

My grandmother was mad, at first, but then realized, my mother

(her daughter) was right. I became her “chauffeur” -- I didn’t mind

at all.
