Newport Harbor High, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division

VI, tops three Newport-Mesa schools ranked in their respective

divisions in the CIF preseason football polls announced Wednesday.

The Sailors, one overtime defeat away from advancing to their

third straight Division VI title game last fall, will open the season

Sept. 12 against Trabuco Hills behind Los Altos, La Mirada and new

Sea View League rival Foothill, ranked Nos. 1-3, respectively.

Costa Mesa is ranked No. 7 in Division VII, while Corona del Mar

is No. 8 in Division IX.

Among those ahead of Costa Mesa, which opens Sept. 13 against CdM,

is Golden West League rival Westminster, which occupies the No. 4

spot. Santa Fe is top-ranked in Division VII, with Arroyo and South

Hills holding the Nos. 2-3 spots, respectively. The Golden West is

the only one of five leagues in Division VII based in Orange County.

The division’s other four leagues are the Almont, Del Rio, Mission

Valley and San Antonio.

CdM is ranked behind Pacific Coast League rivals Northwood (No. 3)

and University (No. 6). Division IX consists of the PCL, Freeway,

Garden Grove, Orange and Valle Vista leagues.

Top-ranked Los Amigos and Western occupy the top two spots in the

Division IX poll. In addition to the Sea View League, Division VI is

made up of the Century, Empire, Miramonte and Suburban leagues.

In Division XIII, where Sage Hill will contest its first varsity

season this fall as a member of the Academy League, Academy entries

Capistrano Valley Christian (No. 2) and Brethren Christian (No. 5)

occupy spots in the poll. Campbell Hall is top-ranked in Division

XIII.

Preseason polls are formulated by the section office. Once the

season begins, weekly polls are compiled based on media voting.
