Newport library will show “Grapes of Wrath”

The Newport Beach Central Library will present a free screening of

“The Grapes of Wrath” at 5 p.m. Oct. 2 as part of a Steinbeck

Centennial celebration.

Tributes in this nationwide observance of the Pulitzer

Prize-winning author include “Bard of the People: The Life and Times

of John Steinbeck” and “California Stories, Reading The Grapes of

Wrath.” Other Steinbeck features at the library will include a

“Steinbeck, His Life & Times” photo exhibit to be on view starting

Sept. 15, a “Grapes of Wrath” book discussion group on Sept. 11 and

more.

The film, to be shown in October, is a black-and-white John Ford

work starring Henry Fonda.

The library is at 1000 Avocado Ave., Newport Beach.

Friends will give library $150,000

The Friends of the Newport Beach library will present a check for

$150,000 to the library at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Newport Beach City

Council meeting.

The gesture will be repeated at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 11 in the Central Library on Avocado Avenue, and Ed Reuscher will represent the Friends

in handing over the check each time.

Funds come from the Friends Bookstore’s sales of donated books.

For six consecutive years, proceeds figures, including quarterly

sales, have amounted to or surpassed the $100,000 mark.
