Pirates eke out a close one, 2-1
Two first-half goals held up for the Orange Coast College men’s
soccer team Friday as the Pirates staved off a late rally by visiting
El Camino to win, 2-1 Friday at OCC.
Freshman midfielder Juan Cervantes dove to head the ball into the
net on a cross from freshman midfielder Wes Watkins to give Coast an
early 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.
Then 22 minutes later, freshman midfielder Jarred Zitt posted his
team-leading third goal of the season after freshman forward Mulawa
Manda freed himself from a defender and found Zitt streaking through
the defense.
Each team tallied eight shots as midfielder Joe Salinas, Joel
Sotolongo, Bobby Dale and Dante Zena fired shots for OCC on El Camino
goalkeeper Emelio Tran.
Freshman goalkeeper Josh Cotsenmoyer picked up his first win of
the season, making three saves in the win.

Coast women roll, 5-1
COSTA MESA -- The train keeps on rolling.
The Orange Coast College women’s soccer team scored four
first-half goals and added another in the second half to down
visiting El Camino, 5-1 on Friday at OCC.
With the win the Pirates improve to 3-0.
Freshman midfielder Melissa Mangrello scored two goals within the
first half-hour and assisted on Coast’s first goal by sophomore
midfielder Fernanda Velasco in the 16th minute as sophomore forward
Jaycee Mahler tallied the fourth first-half goal in the 42nd minute,
on assists from Velasco and Branka Gratzer.
Sophomore defender Alicia Santiago scored her first goal of the
season in the 60th minute as she dribbled 45 yards through several
Warrior defenders.
Defender Lauren Cassity added an assist in the win as Coast
outshot El Camino, 22-2. Pirate goalkeeper Heather Metcalf made one
save to notch her third win of the season.
JC WATER POLO
OCC women win twice
CYPRESS -- The Orange Coast College women’s water polo team, the
defending state champion, opened its season with two victories in the
Cypress College Invitational Friday.
The Pirates’ big win came in the evening, a 6-4, come-from-behind
victory over Northern California power Merced. OCC sophomores Nicole
Sonnenfeld and Shari Meyer scored two goals, while the Pirates
defense held Merced scoreless in the fourth period. Merced had scored
three goals in the third and led, 4-3, but OCC went on a 3-0 run in
the fourth. Sara Natalizo and Courtney Robertson scored one goal each
for the Pirates. Sophomore goalie Heather Deyden recorded five saves.
Coach Mike Giles’ Pirates, ranked No. 1 in the state according to
coaches’ preseason votes, started the day with an 8-5 victory over
American River. Sonnenfeld led Coast with three goals, while Everyn
DeTomaso, Amber Braly, Sarah Mitchell, Natalizo and Meyer scored one
goal each.
Deyden recorded three saves.
The Pirates led, 3-2, at halftime, but then extended their lead
with a 4-1 run in the third period.
Coast returns to tourney action today at 9 a.m. against Sierra,
and then again at 1 p.m., facing Cerritos.

JC MEN’S WATER POLO
Sudden death: Bucs fall
VENTURA -- The Orange Coast College men’s water polo team went
through two overtimes and lost in sudden death, suffering some
exhaustion which led to another loss in the Ventura Tournament
Friday.
The Pirates opened their season with a 9-8 sudden-death loss to
Citrus. OCC Coach Mike Stachowski said the Pirates should have won in
regulation, but they could not convert on a four-meter penalty shot.
Citrus scored the game-winner three and half minutes after the
second overtime period ended. OCC freshman Billy Jolly led the
Pirates with four goals, while freshman Nick Wilbur and sophomore
Greg Worthing scored two goals each. Freshman goalie Shawn Andrews
recorded 10 saves.
Stachowski said his tired was tired after the marathon game
against the Owls, but the Pirates still had to play Los Angeles
Valley, which took advantage and defeated OCC, 17-6.
Wilbur scored two goals,while Kyle Joffe, Omar Reynosa, Steven
Murphy, Castorena added one each.
OCC goalie Mike Nichols stopped nine shots and Andrews recorded
four saves.
The Pirates return to Ventura tourney action today at 11 a.m.
against El Camino. They play another game at 2 p.m., taking on
Cerritos.

UCI women lose, 3-2
ANTEATER STADIUM -- UC Irvine’s women’s soccer team (1-1-0)
dropped a 3-2 decision to Montana (1-2) Friday night in the first
round of the Nike Holiday Invitational.
