Loyola men top UCI, claim tournament crown.

FRESNO -- The Loyola Marymount men’s soccer team broke a 1-1

first-half tie to earn a 3-1 victory over UC Irvine in the

championship game of the Nike Goal Rush Classic at Fresno State.

The Lions struck first on a goal by junior Pat Parker in the ninth

minute. It was Parker’s first goal of the season.

UCI (2-1-1) drew even when junior midfielder Josh Murad tallied an

unassisted goal in the 22nd minute, but it wasn’t long before Loyola

Marymount regained the lead.

Just seven minutes later, senior Andres Murriagui stole the ball

from UCI sophomore goalkeeper Cameron Rossi and found the back of the

net for the game-winner.

With UCI trying to overcome the 2-1 deficit in the second half,

LMU posted an insurance goal when senior defender Jeff Kovar cashed

in a free kick off the foot of junior Michael Erush.

UCI defeated Fresno State Friday in the first of two games in the

tournament, with freshman forward Sean Illif scoring the only goal of

the game five minutes before halftime.

Loyola Marymount improved to 3-0-1 with Sunday’s victory.

UCI returns to action Friday, when it visits the University of San

Francisco at 7 p.m. It will then travel to Sacramento State for a 1

p.m. game Sunday.
