Senior Jamie Gardiner nets a hatrick and an assist to lead the

Southern California College (now Vanguard University) women’s soccer

team to a 10-0 thrashing over Pacific Christian. Freshman Amanda

Draxler tallies two goals and an assist while Katie Kelley, Shelley

Bage, Elisabeth McCary, Polly Gifford and Shirley Blassman also score

goals for the Vanguards, now 3-1.

Estancia High senior James Dawkins shreds the Century defensive

line for 131 yards and two touchdowns while adding a kickoff return

for a score as the Eagles triumph in their opener, 35-6, their third

straight victorious season opener. Dawkins carries 21 times and has

an 87-yard kickoff return. The Eagles’ rushing attack also includes

54 yards from junior Manu Tanielu and 58 combined rushing and passing

yards from Dominick Meyers. The Eagles’ defense limits the Centurions

to 59 rushing yards with help from senior lineman Mike Briano and

senior inside linebackers Andy Galicia and German Diaz. Estancia nets

yards are 316 compared to 93 for Century.

Costa Mesa and Newport Harbor both win their nonleague football

openers. Newport downs Orange, 31-7, behind senior Brett Baker’s 258

all-purpose yards and three touchdowns in the Sailors’ romp. The

Panthers commit six turnovers as Newport’s defense holds them to 59

yards rushing. Costa Mesa shuts out Saddleback, 32-0, downing

Saddleback for the first time in seven tries as a swarming Mustang

defense dominates the first half in which the Costa Mesa defenders

intercept four passes -- three by junior Rovinn Sou as senior

defensive end Nam Kim records three sacks.

Mesa Verde Country Club Head Pro Tom Sargent gains the highest

honor in his line of work. A PGA committee votes him the National PGA

Club Professional of the Year. The award goes to the club pro who

best exemplifies golf as an instructor, mentor, pro shop manager,

player, businessman, rules expert, administrator, section advocate

and community leader. Sargent, a former three-year president of the

Southern California PGA and considered one of the most respected golf

instructors in the country, calls the award “a once-in-a-lifetime

honor.”

Looking back, 10 years ago this week:

Three area competitors representing Newport Aquatics Center Canoe

and Kayak Team fare well in the Western Canadian Sprint Canoeing

Championships at Calgary, Alberta. Lia Rousset of Lido Isle teams

with the 14 members of the Calgary women’s team to win the 500 meter

canoe race and also earns top eight finishes in four other events.

Newport Beach kayaker Kevin Cestra takes third place in three races

while Vaclov Batlik has four solid showings in canoe events. Rousset

takes third in the 1,000-meter Midget K-4 event (four minutes, 38.92

seconds) and sixth in the 500-meter Juvenile K-2 event (2:21.51).

Costa Mesa resident David Schumacher takes first place in the

2.8-mile race at the annual Sunset in the Park Cross Country Meet at

Huntington Beach’s Central Park. Schumacher clocks a time of 14

minutes, 48 seconds, nipping second-place Dan Arsenault. Corona del

Mar boys and girls cross country coach Bill Sumner wins the 40-44 age

group race for men (8:05) and is eighth overall in the 2.8-mile race.

Former Costa Mesa High standout Denisha Bendz takes second in the

18-23 girls age group (18:06).

Newport Harbor uses a 21-point first quarter and their defense

holds up as the Sailors defeat Orange in their opener, 24-0. Junior

tailback Steve Gonzales rushes for two touchdowns, one a 53-yarder

that gives Newport Harbor a 21-0 lead, and amasses 138 rushing yards

as the Sailors collect 300 total yards to Orange’s 159. Newport

Harbor allows only one drive of more than four plays as Phil

Bloomberg and Doug Kimble each recover Orange fumbles and Nathan

Lumpkin and Chad La Bass each intercept passes for Newport.

With only eight pass attempts the entire game, including a pair of

long touchdown strikes from Corona del Mar quarterback Matt Evans to

Tom Hess, the Sea Kings beat Costa Mesa, 20-0, in both team’s season

opener. Sea King running back J.R. Walz carries the ball 20 times for

168 yards as CdM strikes first in the first quarter as Evans hits

Hess for an 84-yard touchdown that breaks a 13-year-old school mark.

Hess’ only two receptions of the game go for touchdowns as he nets

120 receiving yards.
