The following is a list of some of the memorial events set for
Wednesday in Newport-Mesa that will recall last year’s terrorist
attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
* About 20 tall ships will take part in the Southern California
Regional Observance of the Sept. 11 anniversary in the waters off
Newport Harbor and Big Corona Beach. The ceremony will begin at 8:30
a.m., with three wreaths laid (representing the three Sept. 11 sites)
to rest on the water at 8:46.
* The city of Costa Mesa will present a memorial tribute from
noon to 12:45 p.m. at the Arlington Theater on the Orange County
Fairgrounds at 88 Fair Drive. City council members and interfaith
leaders will speak. The program will also spotlight the Costa Mesa
Police Department and the Fire Color Guards. The National Armory will
present a 21 gun salute and a balloon release will conclude the

* The city of Newport Beach will hold a noon memorial at the
City Hall flagpole, 3300 Newport Blvd. City Manager Homer Bludau will
open the ceremony by leading the Pledge of Allegiance. It will be
followed by the Newport Beach Police Department Voices of Freedom
Quartet singing a cappella the “Star Spangled Banner.” Rabbi Richard
Steinberg, of Shir Ha-Ma’alot Temple, will provide the invocation
preceding remarks by Newport Beach Mayor Tod Ridgeway and Fire Chief
Tim Riley. Following a moment of silence, Newport Beach Fire
Department bagpiper Brian Slater will play “Amazing Grace” from the
steps of City Hall.
* At 9:11 a.m. the Newport-Mesa Unified School District will
observe a moment of silence and then recite the pledge of allegiance.
All district flags will be flown at half-staff after the moment of
silence for the remainder of the day. The district is also
encouraging students to wear red, white and blue clothing and
symbols.
* Our Lady Queen of Angels in Newport Beach will hold a special
mass and service at 8:30 a.m. and then the students will release
white doves. The church is at 2046 Mar Vista Drive, Newport Beach
* St. Joachim’s school in Costa Mesa will hold in a scripted
prayer service that is open to the public at 9:15 a.m. The church is
at 1964 Orange Ave.
* Prince of Peace Christian Church and School will have a
remembrance service at 7 p.m. The church is at 2987 Mesa Verde Drive
East in Costa Mesa. Information: (714) 549-0521.
* Orange Coast College will have a “Circle of Remembrance” at
noon in the OCC quad. Student body President Femia Scarfone and OCC
President Gene Farrell will speak.
