L.D. ‘Dean’ Pollom

L.D. “Dean” Pollom, a longtime Costa Mesa resident and former

Costa Mesa Police captain, died Wednesday in his Hemet home of

congestive heart failure. He was 76.

Pollom was one of the first eight officers to be hired to the

Costa Mesa Police Department when it was established in 1954. He was

a skilled investigator who solved several high-profile homicide

cases, said his friend and former colleague Mike Healey.

“He was inquisitive and had that desire to obtain all the facts,”

he said. “He had a knack for getting the facts and a knack for

talking to people.”

Pollom also played a significant role in the growth of the

department, Healey said.

“He contributed a lot to developing the department,” he said. “He

served as a mentor to younger officers. He was an honorable officer

and an honest and straightforward man.”

Pollom, who was a captain in the Costa Mesa Police Department,

left in 1969 to become the Hemet police chief. After retiring, he

served as interim city manager for that city and was later elected to

the Hemet City Council.

Pollom is survived by his wife, Artie, and three daughters. A

memorial service is scheduled to be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the

Miller Jones mortuary in Hemet.

Patricia Mary Lebold

A memorial service was held for Patricia Mary Lebold on Aug. 29.

Lebold died Aug. 24 of breast cancer. She was 70.

Lebold taught first grade for 27 years, most of which were spent

at Anderson Elementary School. She was one of the first to teach at

that school, said her daughter, Andrea Olson.

“Mom was known for her bulletin boards,” she said. “Everything was

perfect with buttons and bows. She was really into detail and loved

everything about life.”

Teaching was her passion, though, Olson said.

“She loved the kids and she wanted to make a difference in their

lives,” she said. “She was really sad when she had to retire because

of health reasons.”

Lebold sat on many boards and was president of the Long Beach

Junior League.

She is survived by her husband, Bill; daughters Lisa Lebold and

Andrea Olson; and two grandchildren.
