Slammin’ Smurfs take season opener, 2-1

The Slammin’ Smurfs of AYSO Region 97-Boys Under 14 Division won
their first game of the season Saturday, a 2-1 win over a team from
Corona del Mar, as AYSO soccer season got underway.
Rex Nelson scored the first Smurf goal on a combined assist from
Branden Rowley and Phil Garrett, as Kyle Caldwell provided the second
goal. Smurf goalkeeper Tommy Olson made several key saves through the
first three quarters.
Christopher Gutierrez took over as goalkeeper for the final
quarter and knocked down a shot on goal.
Kyle Fults, Jordan Hovis, Andrew Kaban, Will Reichenstein,
Benjamin Swift, David Garrett and Edgar Torres played strong defense,
made some effective passes and took several shots on goal for the
Smurfs.
In other Boys Under 14 Region 97 action:
* The Who of Newport Beach 3, Costa Mesa Bruisers 3 -- The end of
the game also signaled the end of a Who breakaway as The Who and
Bruisers battled to a tie Saturday.
The Who received two goals from Travis Kuhns, and another goal
from Tobin Olson as Timothy Regan and Will Atwood assisted.
Who goalies Regan, Juan Trujillo and Christian Harrison provided
steady play in the net as midfielders Jon Gordon and Michael Perkins
each fired one shot on goal.
Sweeper Brandon Parole and defenders Nick Normandin, Jake
Silverman and Vinnie Finn each played well in the tie.

In Region 57 Girls Under 12 action:
* Patriots 3, Silver Strikers 0 -- Kathryn Conner and A.J. Rome
scored two goals and one goal, respectively, to lead the Patriots to
victory.
The game was scoreless at halftime as both teams played solid
defense.
The Patriots received steady defense from Cali Conti, Tess Crane,
Jacquelyn Crossen, Casey Goldberg, Marissa Morrill, Arianna Condon,
Amanda Garrett and Alix Condon.
Patriots’ goalie McKenna Caskey made a big save on Kelsey Valley’s
shot on goal to seal the game for the Patriots.
* Blue Crush 4, California Crazy Cliffords 0 -- Two goals from
Megan Gaal and one goal apiece from Bryn Hastings and Kelsey Davis
led the Blue Crush to their first win Saturday.
Goalie Michelle Lancaster helped in the win.

In Region 97 Boys Under 11 Plus play:
* Newport 1, North Irvine 1 -- Whitney Regan scored the tying goal
for Newport in the third quarter as the two teams fought to a draw.
Newport’s offensive captain Bobby Okvist led the charge as Albert
Ryan, Jesse Hickey, Spencer Rautus, Shawn Shahidi, Cade Feitler and
Jake Manning kept the ball on Irvine’s side of the field for most of
the game and made crisp passes.
Defensive captain Blake Davey led Newport’s defense that included
Mario Figueroa, Spencer Martinez, Malcolm Faigen and Brain Baca.

In Region 57 Boys Under 10 Division:
* Dark Dragons 4, Red Devils 0 -- Cort Hastings and Dylan Pievac
each scored a pair of goals for Coach Scott Pievac’s Dark Dragons as
they recorded their first shutout of the season.
Strong defense was provided by Max Weinberg, Matthew Francini and
Caden Stark.
* Blue Blasters 6, Blue Bombers 0 -- The Blue Blasters came out on
top of their practice game with the Blue Bombers as Misha Pakvassa,
Caleb Candelaria and Craig McKennon scored goals for the Blasters.
The Blue Bombers were led on offense by Marco Urquizza, Brodi
Beal, Gus Moore and Nolan Mena, while receiving strong goalie play
from Marco Piazza.
Kyle Regan, Ethan Murray and Slayter Stanley provided strong
midfield support and the defense was led by Nicolas Jaber, Ryan
Davidson and David Vorona.
* Killer Bees 6, Surf Monkeys 3 -- Led by Chris Whitelegge’s two
goals and one goal apiece from Jordan Desquin, Timmy Root and Jack
Ahearn, Coach Joel Desquin and assistant coach Christian Aqueveque’s
Killer Bees knocked off Roger Bushong’s Surf Monkeys.
Griff Amies and Stefano Nark collected assists for the Killer
Bees, who received solid goaltending from Whitelegge and Root.
Wyeth Rietveld scored three goals for the Surf Monkeys.

In Region 97 Girls Under 10 action:
* Erica Wolf scored a goal for the Blue Crush, coached by Kelly
Berube and assisted by Brett Clemeth, as they battled Chris Sarris’
team at Harper School Saturday.

In Region 97 Boys Under 7 play:
* The Cheetahs began and ended the game in style against the
Hammerheads at Newport Heights as Conner Tamblyn started the game for
the Cheetahs with a goal and Emmanuel Jogwe finished the game with a
Cheetah goal.
Robert Lyons and Montgomery Faigen played solid on offense.
For the Hammerheads, Jake Baxter, Cade Scharnell and Nicholas
Shallahammer played strong defense.
* Also at Newport Heights, the Fireballs battled the Blue
Fireballs.
Marc Gehlke scored a goal in the first quarter, surrounded by
Brooks O’Hea and Nick Huntley.
Nick Roman, Mario Nark and Daniel O’Toole attacked all game while
Marcell DeBarros and Kody Wensley played great defense.
Fireball goalie Mitchell Mendoza thwarted many Blue Fireball shot
attempts, as both teams played exciting soccer.
* The Laser Dragons came out firing against the Tigers as the
goals and assists came from Cole Chapin, Ian MacInnis, Shaun
Vetrovec, J.J. Von Ahlefeld and Peter Kwock.
Fierce defense and goalkeeping was provided by Brandon Beck,
Garrett Byers, Joey Gregory, Jack Williamson and Rian Atheron.

In Region 120 Girls Under 14 action:
* Shockers 3, Twisted Chaos 2
The Shockers scored early and were able to hold-off two late goals
by the Chaos to win their opening game of the season.
Chaos’ fullback Jaye Hellmich and rookie goaltender Cayley
Camarillo played strong defense against the Shockers attacking
offense, not allowing a second-half goal with help from Sara Barr and
Gina Gonzalez.
Tamisha Williams scored back-to-back goals on assists from
forwards Susana Carmona and Annel Alvarez to get the Chaos within one
goal late in the game, but the Shockers held off their surge.
*In Region 120 Girls Under 12 action:
* Girls In Black 4, Poison Ivy 1
Abby Scheafer scored two goals and Tatiana Bush and Stephanie Fox
each added a goal as the Girls In Black defeated Poison Ivy.
Midfielders Alex Payzant, Michelle Eastman, Rebecca Alward and
Mariah Bailey played well as Diana Gutierrez, Nicole Apted and Alexa
Aguilar provided the defense.
Forward Jeana Tanner scored Poison Ivy’s goal.

In Region 120 Girls Under 8 play:
* The Purple Ponies and USA Girls played a competitive match,
with much offensive and defensive highlights.
Tayla Woodbury and Cassie Stevenson each scored a goal and were
assisted on offense and defense by Tanith Kime and Maddie Deutsch.
Christine Mason, Ashleigh Doezie, Danielle Moran and Jordan Page
stopped several shots while in goal.

In Region 120 Boys Under 8 play:
* The Black Dragons, coached by Tim Deutsch, dueled against the
Fireballs Saturday.
Christian Darrow, Garrett Deutsch, Austin Uribe and Tyler Owens
all played aggressively when they were goaltenders.
Bill Crosson, Garrett Kahre, Connor Pearce, Dennis Piens and
Harrison Stern provided excellent defense and ball movement.
* With goals from forwards Christian Chapin and Jake Haar, the
Hurricanes battled the Fireballs at California School Saturday.
Several Hurricanes turned in successful performances.
Forward Clay Carr had the first breakaway shot on goal in the
opening minutes as goalkeeper Riley Brown stood his ground against
the Fireball attack.
Fullback Chris Woycheese consistently covered the backfield for
the Hurricanes, as midfielder Alexis Plata displayed aggressive play
with a well-timed defensive header. Midfielder Matthew LaValley
applied pressure to lead the Hurricanes to their final goal.
* The White Lightening came out firing in the first game of the
season, led by Robert Sullivan’s four goals and Chad Fackler’s two
goals.
Fackler and Colin Moran made accurate passes as Matt Thomas, Drew
Benham, Zac Riedle, George Becerra and Alan Giglio all played tough
defense for Coach Don Fackler’s team.

In Region 120 Girls Under 6 play:
* The Glitter Girls and Dolphins dueled Saturday at Costa Mesa
High with Jillian Cathey, Lizbeth Chavez, Faith Nakamoto, Vanessa
Rosario, Jennifer Valdez and Daniella Amador all playing well for the
Glitter Girls.
The Dolphins played strong as well.

In Region 120 Boys Under 6 action:
* Both the Hoppers and the Eagles tallied a handful of goals
against each other.
Colin Williams, Christopher DeFrenza, Cole Rowerdink, Cole Norris,
Cody Nelson, Karl Donovan and Sean Fisher all got their first touches
of the ball this season.

In Region 57 Girls Division 4 12 and Under play:
* Venomous Vipers 6, Shooting Stars 1
Giving up an early 1-0 lead didn’t faze the Vipers as they
rebounded to score six unanswered goals to win their first game of
the new AYSO season Saturday at Buffalo Hills Park.
Marisa Cummings, Michelle Zucker, Jenna Engstrom and Rene Mycorn
scored the Vipers’ goals.
Mycorn, Zucker and Korinne Kornmann each played goalie to maintain
a second-half shutout as Emily Baker, Shay Bastien, MacKenzie
Constantinou, Andrea Dubis, Kelly Marshall and Sophie Molinari
anchored the defense.

In Region 97 Boys Under 12 play:
* The Patriots battled to two 1-1 ties in their preseason games
Saturday.
Preston Wheeler scored the Patriots’ goal in their first game
against Tim Newman’s team and Spencer Baratto scored the lone goal
against the Hurricanes in the second game with help from Wil Curiel,
Tommy Freeman, Chris O’Campo and Jackson Carmack.
Randall Hause, Daron Arnold and Irving Torres contributed to the
exciting contest as Christopher Cowie, Joshua Bowman and Jay Wilson
played fierce on defense with goalkeepers Jay Wilson and Carmack
holding the opponents at-bay.

In Region 97 Girls Under 10 play:
* Brats 5, Peppermint Twists 0
Courtney McIntosh scored the first two goals followed by single
goals from Madeleine Gallardo, Katie Escher and Claire Castillo to
beat the Peppermint Twists.
Sweeper Maria Swift played well as Sophia Leveque, Alexandra Kehoe
and Zoe Sanglerat contributed on defense.
