UCI water polo moves up

A 10-7 victory over UCLA last week resulted in two rewards for the

UC Irvine men’s water polo team.

Coach Ted Newland’s Anteaters jumped four spots to third in the

nation in this week’s American Water Polo Coaches Association poll.

In addition, sophomore Dreason Barry has been named the Mountain

Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week in men’s water polo.

The Anteaters, ranked seventh in the preseason, defeated then-No.

2 UCLA in the season opener Sunday. Irvine will complete in the

Southern California Tournament at USC Saturday and Sunday. In pool

play Saturday, the Anteaters face UC Santa Barbara at 10:20 a.m. and

Pepperdine at 3 p.m.

Stanford, coached by former Corona del Mar High head man John

Vargas, remains No. 1 in this week’s poll with USC at No. 2.

Barry, a 6-foot-9 two-meter man scored a game-high four goals in

UCI’s win over UCLA. He scored twice in the first quarter and came

back with two more goals in the third period, as UCI overcame a 5-4

halftime deficit. Barry scored only 15 goals in his freshman season

last year.

POLO: OCC men split

VENTURA -- The Orange Coast College men’s water polo team split

its two games in the Ventura Mini Tournament Thursday at Ventura

College.

Greg Worthing and Nick Wilbur scored three goals each to pace the

Pirates’ 12-4 victory over Cerritos.

Kile Baker collected 10 saves and Mike Nichols added two goals for

OCC, which received two assists from Billy Jolly and Wilbur.

In the second game, Grossmont defeated Orange Coast (3-4), 16-11,

despite six goals by Jolly and two each from Jake Herrmann and

Worthing. Abner Castorena had two assists against Grossmont.

SNOWBOARDING: Sladics

CARDRONA WANAKA, New Zealand -- Chanelle Sladics, a senior at

Newport Harbor High and a standout on the Sailors’ girls field hockey

team, won the girls World Junior title in the halfpipe at the

Vodafone Snowboard Nations Junior World Championships Thursday.

Sladics represented the U.S. Junior National Snowboarding Team.

She scored the highest, 23.1, in her first of three runs in the event

that has its winner determined by judging. Sladics finished runner-up

in the overall rankings for the Junior Women Division (age 16-17)

after her stellar performance in the USA Snowboarding Association

National Championships in March.

FIELD HOCKEY: Tars tie

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- Edison High took advantage of a Newport Harbor

penalty on a corner play with no time on the clock in the first half

to take the lead, but the Sailors rebounded with a second-half goal

as the two teams tied their Sunset League-opener, 1-1, Thursday at Edison High.

Edison’s Katie Cornell scored Edison’s lone goal on an assist from

Jenna Schmidts with no time remaining in the first half after the

Sailors committed what Newport Coach Sharon Wolfe said was “either an

inside stick or a body obstruction,” inside the circle, a penalty on

Edison’s first corner pass, allowing the Chargers to take another

corner play and they converted to take a 1-0 lead.

The Sailors rebounded at the 20-minute mark in the second half as

midfielder Kerrie Gates fired the ball into the right side of the net

to even the game, and that’s the way it stayed.

Both teams are now 0-0-1.

The Sailors played inspired defense highlighted by Dana Owad,

Lauren Curtis, Danielle Pfaff and Tiffany Vandersloot as Amanda

Whitman made two saves.

VOLLEYBALL: Lions swept

COSTA MESA -- Azusa Pacific,d No. 14 in the NAIA, swept host

Vanguard University in women’s volleyball Thursday, posting a 30-26,

30-27, 30-21conquest to improve to 6-3, 1-1 in the Golden State

Athletic Conference. Vanguard fell to 3-5, 0-3.

Livia Peace and Jaclyn Lee led the Lions with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Setters Jennifer Johnson and Lacey Roberts had 21 and

18 assists.

TENNIS: Lightning wins

DOWNEY -- The Sage Hill High girls tennis team’s freshman trio of

Kelly Ammerman, Katie McKitterick and Paige Fullmer led the Lightning

to a 10-8 season-opening victory over host Calvary Chapel Thursday

afternoon.

The three singles players scored eight wins for the Lightning, as

Ammerman dropped just three games and McKitterick lost only four.

Fullmer’s performance made the difference for Sage Hill, Coach A.G.

Longoria said.

TENNIS: Estancia romps

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Estancia High girls tennis team swept in

doubles play grabbed the advantage in singles action to win its

Golden West League opener over host Ocean View, 16-2, Thursday.

Estancia (1-1 overall) was led by the doubles teams of Huong Thai

and Kittiya Sudhikam; sisters Heather Morton and Melissa Morton; and

Danielle Moran and Asia Ingram.

POLO: Sage Hill loses

CORONA DEL MAR -- The Sage Hill High boys water polo team lost its

season opener, 10-6, to nonleague foe Rancho Alamitos at Corona del

Mar, the site of the Lightning’s games, Thursday.

Anthony Milovonstev and Julian Smith-Newman scored two goals each

for the Lightning, while Chase Caillouette and Tyler Youngblood added

one goal each.

TENNIS: Mesa romps

COSTA MESA -- The Costa Mesa High girls tennis team jumped out in

a big way in their first match in the Golden West League Thursday,

beating league rival Saddleback, 17-1, at Costa Mesa High.

Costa Mesa senior Hilary Havens, the No. 1 singles player, didn’t

lose a game in beating the three opponents she faced as the Mustang

doubles teams lost only six games total.

The Mustang duos of Minh-Thy Pham-Chi Doan and Laura Fais-Thu Tran

posted impressive victories, losing only one game apiece.
