Anteaters Wing past two foes at AF tourney

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team

recorded two victories, including a three-game sweep over Georgia

State Friday in the Falcon Invitational, hosted by Air Force.

UC Irvine sophomore outside hitter Kelly Wing led the way,

tallying 40 kills in the two games, including tying a career-high 24

kills in a four-game win over Northern Arizona. Wing recorded 16

kills, as UCI featured a balanced attack in a 30-13, 30-17, 30-22 win

over Georgia State. Sami Cash, UCI’s sophomore middle blocker, and

sophomore Dana Kurzbard contributed 11 kills each, while senior

outside hitter Chanda McLeod added nine kills. Irvine setter Ashlie

Hain finished with 48 assists.

Earlier in the day, Wing’s 24 kills and McLeod’s fourth

double-double (18 kills, 18 digs) of the season, led the Anteaters to

a 30-22, 30-20, 28-30, 30-28 victory over Northern Arizona.

Cash led the team with seven total blocks, while Hain tied a

career-high 17 digs and amassed 59 set assists for the squad.

As a team, UC Irvine tallied 75 kills and 68 digs to NAU’s 56

kills and 48 digs.

COLLEGE MEN’S SOCCER: UCI wins, 1-0

SAN FRANCISCO -- Sean Illiff took a crossing pass from close range

in the 59th minute and beat the University of San Francisco

goalkeeper Mark Muleady to give the visiting UC Irvine Anteaters

(3-1-1) a 1-0 victory in men’s soccer over the Dons (2-2) Friday.

The Dons had the statistical advantage, outshooting UCI, 12-5, but

UCI goalkeeper Cameron Rossi made five saves in recording his third

shutout in five games.

COLLEGE WOMEN’S SOCCER: Anteaters fall, 3-1

ANTEATER STADIUM -- UC Irvine’s women’s soccer team saw its record

fall to 2-2 Friday night as visiting Pepperdine scored three goals in

the first half and held on for a 3-1 nonconference victory.

Hayley McNallen scored an unassisted goal in the 19th minute to

give the Anteaters a 1-0 lead, but Pepperdine answered with three

goals before halftime as Ali Pavoni, Janelle Hillseth and Jenna Fodor

connected.

JC MEN’S SOCCER: OCC tops Long Beach, 2-1

LONG BEACH -- Orange Coast College freshman Derek Martell scored

his fourth goal of the season in the 88th minute to lead the visiting

Pirates’ men’s soccer team to a 2-1 nonconference victory over Long

Beach Friday.

After a scoreless first half, Jared Zitt netted a goal off an

assist from Miguel Ochoa, that gave OCC (5-2) a 1-0 lead in the 56th

minute.

Long Beach (0-4-1) answered five minutes later, as Tumani Godwin

scored.

But, the Pirates earned their game-winning goal after a corner

kick from Greg Reese. Martell headed the ball in from the far post.

OCC goalkeeper Josh Cotsenmoyer recorded five saves in the win.

JC WOMEN’S SOCCER: Bucs rally for 3-2 victory

RIVERSIDE -- Orange Coast College’s unbeaten women’s soccer team

opened Orange Empire Conference play Friday at Riverside on a winning

note, besting the Tigers, 3-2.

Riverside led, 2-1, on the strength of two Candace Carter goals.

The Pirates, now 5-0 overall, got two goals from sophomore Jaycee

Mahler, a first-half score off a Marissa McGregor assist, and the

winner, an unassisted score in the 65th minute.

Nikki Saenz scored the equalizer earlier in the second half, off

an assist from Mahler.

Heather Metcalf had three saves for the Pirates. Julleen Topps of

Riverside kept it from getting out of hand with eight saves for the

Tigers.

JC MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: Pirates sweep

CHULA VISTA -- Orange Coast College’s women’s volleyball team

swept host Southwestern College aside in nonconference play Friday,

posting a 30-20, 30-24, 30-27 victory in the season opener.

Casey Petersen (10 kills), Kelly Overby (nine kills) and Elisha

Counts (17) were the pacesetters for the 1-0 Pirates.
