Spurgeon Award to go to Costa Mesa chief

Costa Mesa Police Chief Dave Snowden has been selected to receive

the prestigious Spurgeon Award at the Exploring Recognition Luncheon

at noon Wednesday at the Westin South Coast.

The Exploring Program of Learning for Life of Orange County honors

the recipient of this award annually in recognition of outstanding

support to the Explorer Program and the greater community. Snowden

has been a major support of the Costa Mesa Police Explorer program

and a leader on the Exploring fund-raising team.

Prior recipients include Chief Ron Lowenberg, John F. Dean, Chief

Chip Prather, Chief Paul Walters, Mike Capizzi, former Sheriff Brad

Gates, Robert McCurdy, Tom Riley and Robert Warmington. The award is

named in honor of William Spurgeon III, the founder of Exploring and

a lifetime Orange County resident. Local Orange County youth David

Paquin, Raul Perez and Jamie Walker will be awarded with the Young

American Award along with a scholarship. Huntington Beach Police Lt.

J. B. Hume will be honored with the Explorer Advisor of the Year

Award.

FORTY-FIVE YEARS OF SERVICE: Earnest Kostlan celebrated his 45th

year in Kiwanis in August, according to Charles Markel, past

president of the Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club. Buzz has been a dentist in

Costa Mesa during this time and was a member of the Downtown Costa

Mesa Kiwanis Club and the now-merged Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club. Adds

Markel: “Lots of community service in his 45 years.” Buzz chairs the

Spiritual Aims Committee.

“Buzz was very involved with a project we had for a number of

years, and it was called the ‘Layman’s Recognition Luncheon.’ It’s a

project where we asked the ministers of the churches in Costa Mesa to

bring their outstanding layman to a luncheon where they were

recognized,” according to Markel. Kostlan has been active in securing

moneys for the Salvation Army and Wycliff Bible Studies. He also has

been supportive of a Kiwanis project known as “Parks Ministries,”

where they provide religious services at the state and national parks

in California. during the summer. Congratulations Buzz on a life well

lived!

PEACE JAM: Representatives of community and faith-based

organizations from throughout Orange County will gather at the Orange

Coast Unitarian Universalist Church in Costa Mesa on Saturday to

participate in the 2002 Orange County Peace Jam. The church is at

1259 Victoria St.

The free-to-the-public event will take place from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Costa Mesa Mayor Linda Dixon will make opening remarks,

followed by “jamming” performances by local musicians from throughout

Southern California including “And the Angels Sing,” Brian Taraz and

the Orange Coast Unitarian Universalist choir.

The Peace Jam will be held in celebration of the United Nations’

International Day of Peace, which takes place annually in September.

Local groups organizing the event for Sept. 21 are the Baha’is of

Orange County, Amnesty International of Orange County, the NAACP, the

United Nations Assn. of Orange County and the hosting Orange Coast

Unitarian Universalist Church.

CASINO NIGHT: Harbor Mesa Lions “Viva Las Vegas” Casino Night will

be held on Friday, Oct. 18, at the Neighborhood Community Center,

1845 Park Ave., Costa Mesa. The event will start at 7 p.m. and will

feature blackjack, slots, craps, roulette and a silent auction.

Tickets are $30 per person and include dinner, one drink and $100 in

gambling scrip. Dinner will be catered by “Wolfgang Puck’s Cafe” and

a DJ will provide the entertainment. Proceeds from this fund-raiser

will be donated to local charities and the Lion’s Sight and Hearing

Foundation, which provides hearing and eye testing for local
