COLLEGE WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: ‘Eaters split

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team

split its two matches Saturday at the Air Force Falcon Invitational

to finish with a 3-1 record in the tournament.

UCI defeated Furman, 30-15, 30-27, 29-31, 30-27 in the Anteaters

first match. Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Wing amassed a

career-high 33 kills to lead Irvine to the victory. Rebecca Larsen

added 11 kills and senior Chanda McLeod contributed 10 kills and 15

digs. Setter Ashlie Hain collected 64 set assists. Furman was led by

Abby Simon and Carrie Rowley with 16 kills each.

Air Force defeated the Anteaters, 32-30, 30-21, 32-30, in Irvine’s

final match of the tourney. Delavane Diaz led the Falcons with 13

kills, Lamecca Jefferson had 11 and Tiffany Bishop 10. Wing led UCI with 11 kills. Air Force had a hitting percentage of .414 to UCI’s

.252.

The Anteaters (6-3) open Big West Conference play on the road this

week, traveling to Idaho Wednesday and Utah State Thursday.

COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY: Lions sparkle

SAN DIEGO -- Vanguard University’s cross country teams stood out

at the 59th annual Aztec Cross Country Invitational, the men, led by

Tony Magana, finishing second, and the women, behind the 1-2 punch of

Sarah Hall and Jenny Thune, finishing fifth.

Magana was second overall in the men’s division in 26:56. Mikael

Larsson was fifth in 27:42, followed by Matt Meyer (12th in 28:53),

John Nelson (21st in 29:48) and Edel Lopez (40th in 30:59).

Hall and Thune went 7-8 in the women’s division with times of

19:50 and 19:53, respectively, followed by Elizabeth Huipe (26th at

20:54), Bridget Lonsdale (67th in 23:14) and Carrie McIntyre (75th in

23:52).
