Councilman joins airport commission

The local chapter of a statewide group has appointed Newport Beach

Councilman Gary Adams to the Orange County Airport Land Use

Commission.

At a Thursday meeting, the Orange County chapter of the League of

California Cities named Adams, a former mayor, to the panel.

Adams replaces council colleague Gary Proctor on the seven-member

panel. Proctor resigned from the commission earlier in the summer.

Tom Naughton, a Newport Beach resident and president of the

Airport Working Group, also holds a seat on the commission, which

makes recommendations to the Board of Supervisors about planning

matters at John Wayne Airport.

Outside of his civic duties, Adams works as a traffic and civil

engineer at the Parsons Corporation, which is based in Pasadena.

“My background makes me pretty well-suited to it,” Adams said of

the appointment.

In his role on the commission, Adams represents Newport Beach,

Costa Mesa and Irvine.

Adams is nearing the end of his first term on the council

representing District 4. He replaced former mayor John Noyes in 1998.

He will seek a second term in November. Prior to his election to the

council, Adams served as a member of the city’s Planning Commission.

Colombian singer will assist breast cancer race

Colombian singer and songwriter Soraya will kick off the Survivor

Ceremony at the 2002 Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Orange

County Race for the Cure on Sunday.

The performer -- who has opened for such popular artists as

Natalie Merchant, Sting and Alanis Morrissette -- lost her mother,

grandmother and aunt to breast cancer and was diagnosed with the

disease two year ago. She also will share her personal experience and

fight against the disease.

Soraya has performed with the Komen Foundation on a number of

occasions as part of an ongoing alliance with them and a personal

mission to educate women.

The Orange County race is one of the top five races for raising

money out of 112 across the country. Last year’s race, which was the

largest thus far with more than 30,000 participants, raised more than

$1.5 million, adding to the $7.7 million the race has raised over the

last 10 years.

Orange County breast cancer outreach, education, screening,

diagnostic and treatment programs receive 75% of the net proceeds

while the other 25% supports the Komen Foundation Research Program.

Dale Earnhardt memorial to debut

An official unveiling of the Dale Earnhardt memorial will take

place at the Cruisin’ For A Cure Hot Rod fund-raiser at the Orange

County Fairgrounds on Sept. 28.

The memorial, a 1953 Chevy Sedan Delivery, will tour the country

in honor of the seven-time NASCAR champion and in an effort to raise

money for prostate cancer research .

The event will also have a display of antique fire trucks, hot

rods, classics, muscle cars, Corvettes, PT cruisers, Mustangs and

motorcycles.

Newport Harbor cheer team earns awards

The All-Squad Cheer Team at Newport Harbor High School took home a

slew of awards at the recent Professional USA (United Spirit Assn.)

Elite Cheer Camp held at UCLA. The team competed for the first time

against other schools on the West Coast.

The varsity squad earned the “Most Improved” award; the junior

varsity team snagged the “Superior” award and both squads won the

“Spirit” award on the second night. Four junior varsity members --

Kate Curry, Nina Taylor, Jessica Cochems and Ashley Warneke -- took

third place in the stunt challenge.

The cheer teams are supported by advisor Jennifer Cilderman,

varsity coach Amber Jolly and junior varsity coach Breean Carter. The

cheer squads just selected a competition team for the fall.
