Sea Kings handle Huntington Beach

Corona del Mar High’s No. 1-ranked Sea Kings were 13-5 winners at

Huntington Beach to improve to 2-0 in nonleague girls tennis Tuesday.

Keyed by the play of singles stars Taylynn Snyder and Brittany

Holland, Corona del Mar used a variety of players in the lineup to

post the anticipated victory.

CdM is at Woodbridge Thursday afternoon.

Newport Harbor High’s girls tennis team was a 17-1 winner over visiting Tesoro High Tuesday in the season opener for both teams.

Newport Harbor is at Sunny Hills today for another nonleague

match, at 3 p.m.

* The Estancia High girls tennis team continues to enjoy its new

Golden West League surroundings, as it edged visiting league rival

Westminster, 10-8, Tuesday.

Senior Kelly Trettin, playing at No. 2 singles, prevailed in the

last match of the day to wrap up the win for the Eagles (2-1, 2-0 in

league).

“We are very excited to be in the Golden West League,” first-year

Estancia Coach Rachel del los Santos said.

Estancia’s fortunes were also boosted by the No. 1 doubles team of

junior Huong Thai and sophomore Yvonne Ziedler, which swept by a

combined margin of 18-5.

The Eagles continue their debut Golden West League campaign

Thursday at Saddleback.

Orange Coast College’s men’s soccer team was a 3-2 winner at Santa

Barbara CC Tuesday.

The Pirates sewed it up in the 85th minute when Stan Duke headed a

ball in from a cross from Wes Watkins to up the score to 3-1, just

five minutes after Santa Barbara pared the deficit to 2-1.

Muluwa Manda, off an assist from Joel Sotolongo, and Joe Salinas,

with a 30-yard shot in the 63rd minute, accounted for the rest of

Coast’s scoring.

Coast’s Hilario Arriaga was credited with two saves.

OCC is now 6-2. Santa Barbara fell to 5-2-1.

“It was a great result. We kind of made a statement with this

win,” said OCC Coach Laird Hayes.

MEN’S SOCCER: Lions lose, 3-2

Occidental College’s visiting Tigers pulled out a 3-2

nonconference men’s soccer victory over Vanguard University Tuesday.

Andrew Sundseth scored the Lions’ first goal and assisted on Matt

Hess’ goal, which tied the game at 2-2 in the 76th minute, but Oxy

struck in the 83rd minute to pull it out.

Vanguard nearly tied the game again with two minutes remaining,

but Michael Weisz’s rocket shot bounced off the cross bar and away

from the goal.

The Lions, who travel to Cal Tech on Thursday, fall to 2-5.

Occidental improves to 2-2.

FIELD HOCKEY: Tars win, 1-0

Newport Harbor High’s Sailors (1-0-1) were 1-0 winners over Huntington Beach in girls field Hockey Tuesday in Sunset League play

at Harper Community Center in Costa Mesa.

Jill Whitfield scored the game’s only goal with seven minutes left

off a penalty corner. Kirsten Chamberlain and Caitlin Farrell were

credited with assists on the play.

VOLLEYBALL: CdM falls in four

Corona del Mar High’s girls volleyball team dropped its second

straight nonleague match Tuesday, a 15-7, 12-15, 14-16, 12-15 decision to visiting Capistrano Valley.

Claire Allen was CdM’s kill leader and Britta Nielsen and Jordan

Smith were in double figures. Smith was credited with 25 digs.

The Sea Kings will try to rebound Friday in the pool rounds of the

Dave Mohs Tournament at Marina High.

* Estancia High’s girls volleyball team lost its first match under

new head coach Ruth Laneman Tuesday, falling to La Quinta, 12-15,

5-15, 6-15, in a nonleague match.

Senior Tori Gerard had a team-high two kills for the Eagles as

Laura Morton tallied eight assists for Estancia (0-1) which faces

Santiago at home today.

Muriel Mason had seven points in all three games for Estancia.

WOMEN’S GOLF: UCI eighth

The UC Irvine women’s golf team opened the season with an

eighth-place finish at the Oregon State/Shanico Invitational at the

Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore. Tuesday.

Sophomore Stella Lee shot a 2-over 74 to finish 10th with a

54-hole total of 223 (73-76-74), nine strokes behind medalist Nicole

Keller of Idaho.

Angela Won shot 73-80-76--229, Sara Huber carded a 79-74-78--231,

Shelly Raworth finished 78-82-83--243 and Channing Lovejoy finished

at 256.

WATER POLO: Mesa falls, 8-4

Costa Mesa’s boys water polo team dropped its season opener at El

Modena in nonleague play Tuesday, 8-4, a marked difference from last

year’s 17-3 pasting from El Modena.

Brian Tipton had two goals and Evan Spencer and Adam Douglas each

scored for Mesa.

Matt Jaroslawski was credited with three saves.
