Stanford contingent leading way

COSTA MESA -- Two former Stanford players are leading the charge

as seven Americans remain alive out of 16 players in the championship

singles field in the $10,000 United States Tennis Association Diadora

Pro Championships at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

In the USTA Futures Tour event, which features up-and-coming

players on their way to the Association of Tennis Professionals Tour,

top-seeded Radim Zitko of the Czech Republic edged his first-round

opponent Wednesday, Mirko Pehar, 7-5, 7-6 (3), while second-seeded

Jeff Williams of the U.S. was upset by France’s Cedric Kauffman, 6-4,

6-4.

Recent Stanford graduate K.J. Hippensteel and former Cardinal

teammate David Martin both advanced to the second round, along with

former UC Berkeley star Andrew Scorteanu and fellow American Marc

Silva.

Americans Chris Magyary, Andrew Colombo and Zach Fleischman

advanced to the second round in Tuesday’s action.

Other singles winners included Nenad Toroman (South Africa), Oskar

Johansson (Sweden), Matthew Hanlin (Great Britain), Paul Logtens

(Holland), W.P. Meyer (South Africa), Raven Klassen (South Africa)

and Rameez Junaid (Australia).

In doubles Tuesday, Cameron Ball and Carsten Ball of Corona del

Mar lost in a finals qualifier to Danny Westerman and Jeremy

Wurtzman, who advanced to the quarterfinals Wednesday.

The event runs through Sunday. Matches begin every day at 10 a.m.
