Bad bail check lands man back in jail

A man reputed be a skinhead gang member is back in jail after

being bailed out of Orange County Jail with $500,000 in phony

cashier’s checks in July.

Orange County Sheriffs deputies arrested Dominic Peter Rizzo, 33,

in the 2300 block of Delaware Street on Friday in Huntington Beach

during a car-stop, said Sheriff spokesman Jon Fleischman.

Rizzo was being held on attempted murder charges when he was

bailed out on July 17 with the phony cashier’s checks. Police

discovered that the checks were fake 18 days after releasing Rizzo

and issued a warrant for his arrest.

The incident caused the department to change its policy on

accepting checks. It will now only accept checks during business

hours so that check funds can be verified.

Police helicopter unit shows high response

The Huntington Beach Police Department released August figures for

its helicopter unit, which show that it responded to nearly 600

service calls that month.

Helicopter unit officers made 29 felony arrests, 52 misdemeanor

arrests, issued 40 vehicle citations and witnessed 99 other car

related violations when no patrol units were available. The police

helicopter was also the first police unit on scene on 98% of the

calls last month. The helicopter crews also took part in a scientific

study on bacteria levels of the beach during low tide, and a daytime

helicopter crew saw a swarm of about 40 sharks near the shoreline on

the state beach, which they notified lifeguards of. Another crew saw

a large fuel spill in Huntington Harbour and notified the Harbor

Patrol who quickly contained it.

Firefighters able to save one of their own

Huntington Beach Firefighters helped save one of their own last

month when they performed CPR on fire shop employee Rick Mishler, 52,

after he suffered a massive heart attack at his home. Paramedics from

Fire Department Station No. 3 took him to Orange Coast Memorial

Hospital where he was placed in intensive care and listed as being in

critical condition. Mishler was released from the hospital on Sept. 9

and is now recovering at his home.
