Volunteers needed for special ed committee

The Ocean View School District is looking for volunteers for its

Special Education Community Advisory Committee.

The board of trustees appoints city residents, educators and

community representatives to the committee, which meets at least four

times per year and advises the board of trustees on how to set annual

priorities. The committee also assists in parent education and

volunteer recruitment, encourages community involvement and supports

activities on behalf of handicapped children.

Parents of disabled and non-disabled school-age children are

encouraged to apply.

Applications to serve on the committee are available at the Ocean

View School District office, 17200 Pinehurst Lane. For more

information please call (714) 847-2551.

Get a haircut, help fight breast cancer

Golden West College cosmetology students are offering their

services to help fight breast cancer. They will expertly trim your

locks for a mere $10 and give the money to the City of Hope Medical

Center and Beckman Research Institute.

The second annual Haircuts For Hope “cut-a-thon” fund-raiser will

be held at the Golden West College cosmetology client lab on Tuesday

from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The fund-raiser is organized by members of the California

Association of Cosmetology Teachers with City of Hope Medical Center

and Beckman Research Institute.

All community colleges with cosmetology programs in Southern

California are participating in the weeklong fund-raising event.

Colleges throughout the region will hold their fund-raisers on

various days of the week.

Golden West College’s cosmetology program raised the most money

among last year’s fund-raisers.

“It went very well for us last year, considering that our day was

Sept. 11,” Cosmetology Coordinator Jean May said.

For more information, call Jean May at (714) 895-8118.
