UC Irvine’s women’s volleyball team bounced back from Wednesday’s

Big West Conference loss at Idaho to slap down host Utah State in

four games Thursday night in Logan, Utah, 30-28, 31-29, 25-30, 30-21.

The Anteaters, now 7-4, 1-1 in the Big West, came up with balanced

attack -- Kelly Wing with 19 kills, Rebecca Larsen with 11 kills,

Dana Kurzbad with 10 kills and Chanda McLeod with nine kills.

Ashlie Hain was credited with 53 assists for the Anteaters.

VOLLEYBALL: Lions lose

The Cal Lutheran Regals snuffed out any hopes the Lions of

Vanguard University had of breaking their five-game losing streak,

defeating VU, 3-0, in a nonconference decision.

Debby Baeder was Vanguard’s standout with 11 kills.

Cal Lutheran logged a 30-20, 30-16, 30-22 decision to improve to

5-6. Vanguard fell to 3-7.

FIELD HOCKEY: Tars tie, 0-0

Newport Harbor High’s field hockey team remained unbeaten (1-0-2)

Thursday following a scoreless tie with a strong Santa Ana Saints

team on the latter’s field in Sunset League play.

“It was a fast-paced game,” said Newport Harbor Coach Sharon

Wolfe. “Their field is narrow, shot, fast and bumpy.”

Amanda Wittman had three saves and right winger Christina Barbatti

stood out with strong play on a day when Newport outshot the Saints,

8-5, but could not convert against a team (2-0-1) which had among its

victims, Marina, by a 2-0 count.

The Sailors host Marina on Tuesday in a key collision at Harper

Community Center.

TENNIS: Sailors stumble

NEWPORT BEACH -- The doubles duo of A.J. Olson and Diana Khoury

won all three sets and junior Vanessa Dunlap won two of three sets,

but it wasn’t enough as Newport Harbor dropped a nonleague match

Thursday TO visiting Capistrano Valley, 11-7.

“Megan and Gabby Adams had two close sets,” said Harbor Coach

Fletcher Olson. “It was a good match, Capo Valley is very strong.”

The Sailors fall to 2-1 and Capo improved to 2-1. Newport now eyes

a duel with Peninsula High in Palos Verdes Wednesday at 2 p.m.

TENNIS: Mesa falls, 15-3

COSTA MESA -- The Mustangs of Costa Mesa High dropped a nonleague

match to visiting El Modena Thursday at Costa Mesa High, 15-3.

Kim Nguyen won the only singles match for Mesa as the doubles

teams of Chi Doan and Minh-Thy Pham and Brenda Tran and Laura Fais

each won one set apiece for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs fall to 2-3, 2-0 in the Golden West League and El

Modena improves to 4-0.

El Modena 15, Costa Mesa 3 Singles -- K. Nguyen (CM) lost to Smetus 0-6, lost to

Orand 2-6, def. Galub 6-2; H. Nguyen (CM) lost, 0-6, 1-6, 2-6; E.

TENNIS: Sage Hill rolls

Sage Hill High’s Lightning blitzed host Whitney in Cypress, 18-0,

improving to 3-0, 2-0 in the Academy League.

Kellie Ammerman, Katie McKitterick and Paige Fullmer swept in

singles, and doubles followed suit in the runaway victory.

GOLF: Sea Kings lead

Corona del Mar pulled out a nonleague “decision” Thursday over

Fountain Valley the old fashioned way -- on a tiebreaker at Newport

Beach Country Club.

With both tied at 260 after recording their five-player totals,

the sixth score proved to be the decisive number as CdM’s Jessica

Parker shot a 62 to defeat her counterpart by six strokes to give the

Sea Kings the “edge” on the par-35 front nine at NBCC. Victory,

however, hinges on next week with the final nine holes on Fountain

Valley’s home course.

Jackie McCoy led all CdM players with a 46 followed by Jennifer

Woo’s 47, Veronica Friedman’s 53, and Katie Albright and Maggie

Nelson each carded 57s.

Fountain Valley’s Minnie Choi shot a sizzling 33 for medalist

honors.

SOCCER: VU men romp

Matt Hess had three goals to collect his fourth-career hat trick

in leading Vanguard’s men’s soccer team to a 7-0 win over host Cal

Tech in a nonconference game Thursday.

Sean Ganey added the next two goals with Brian Martinez and Nate

Kramer each adding a score and an assist for the Lions, now 3-5.

Lion goalkeeper Christopher Swift made two saves.

POLO: Mesa wins, 9-7

COSTA MESA -- Adam Douglas scored all nine goals for the Mustangs

(1-1) at Costa Mesa High to beat Sage Hill in nonleague boys water

polo Thursday, 9-7.

Chris Darnas added four assists, Evan Spencer had three assists

and Anthony Adamowicz and Brian Tipton each supplied one assist for

the Mustangs.

Mesa goalie Matt Jaroslawski made 11 saves.

Costa Mesa hosts Orange on Tuesday.

GIRLS TENNIS: Eagles romp

The Doubles duos of Melissa Morton and Yvonne Zaidler and Asia

Ingram and Heather Morton each swept through their three sets and

Staci Nellor won all three sets she played to lead Estancia to a 16-2

Golden West League win over host Saddleback, 16-2, Thursday.

The win improves the Eagles to 3-1, 3-0 in league as Saddleback

falls to 0-3 in league.

Estancia returns to action on Tuesday at Santa Ana.
